30 days of biking: Lake Boren Park

A short detour off my usual route to the grocery store took me to the fishing pier at Lake Boren Park in Newcastle this afternoon.

Three fishermen were trying their luck with hook and line when I showed up in between a series of showers.

I’ve ridden a lot of miles under the guise of running errands to the grocery store over the years. It’s not uncommon for me to add between 1 and 20 or 30 miles to a trip to the store.

Magazine and new books aid search for bicycling adventures in Pacific NW

The recent string of sunny spring days should be setting cyclists’ legs a-twitching in the Pacific Northwest as they think ahead to summer adventures on their bicycles.

Picking a destination should be easier than ever this summer as at least three new books will share prime bicycling routes in Oregon and Washington. Actually, with so many choices, picking a biking option might be more difficult

Bicycles spared fare increase on Washington State Ferries

Fares are going up on the Washington State Ferry system beginning May 1 — except for bicycles.

The state announced Tuesday an across-the-board 3% increase that “applies to all fare types, including vehicle/driver, walk-on, and multi-ride cards.”

But not for bicycles. Riding a bike isn’t only a good idea when it comes to the gas pump, it also makes good sense at the fare booth. …

Write WSDOT: Hood Canal bridge still needs work for safe bicycling

Washington state bicycling advocates are facing a March 30 (Friday) deadline to convince the state to make some safety improvements to the Hood Canal Bridge (left).

The Bicycle Alliance of Washington (BAW) is asking cyclists to contact state Department of Transportation officials to get moving on the project.

Although replaced in 2009, the bridge that links the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas still needs an estimated $1.8 million in work to make it safer for bicycles.

Problems include uneven surfaces between bridge sections, slick metal plates, raised rivets on the plates that narrow riding surface and gaps that have trapped narrow bike tires, causing falls. …
