Safe passing bill hearing in Olympia today supports bicycling

Thanks to all those bicyclists who are heading to Olympia today for Transportation Advocacy Day.

One bicycle-friendly Senate bill that’s on tap for a hearing Tuesday would make it legal for motorists to cross over a double-yellow line to give safe passage to bicyclists or pedestrians. The bill defines safe passage as a 3-foot gap.

California governor rejects 3-foot bill for second time; applauds effort for bicycle safety

California Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. vetoed a bill for the second time on Friday that would require motorists give bicyclists a 3-foot gap when passing.

This time, Brown objected to a provision that allows motorists to cross a double-yellow line if there’s no room to give 3 feet of space.

Currently, there are 21 states that require drivers to give bicyclists and pedestrians a gap of 3 or more feet when passing (Pennsylvania is 4 feet). …

Nebraska 3-foot passing bill on Governor’s desk

The Nebraska legislature has sent a bill that requires motorists to give bicyclists 3 feet of clearance when passing to Gov. Dave Heineman for his signature.

Unlike the struggle similar bills face in some states, the bicycle safety bill has been in the fast lane in Nebraska. It was introduced by Sen. Tom Hansen in January and unanimously approved and forwarded last week.

The governor’s signature would make Nebraska the 21st state to enact a safe passing law of 3 feet or greater. ….

Another attempt for 3-foot passing law in California

The struggle to pass a law in California that requires motorists to give bicycles 3 feet of space when passing won't die.

A state senator from Long Beach on Friday submitted SB 1464 to the state legislature. It makes it illegal for the driver of a motor vehicle to overtake a bicycle traveling in the same direction “at a distance of less than three feet… “

So far, 20 states nationwide require that motorists give bicyclists at least a 3-foot margin when passing.

This is the third 3-foot passing bill introduced in the California …
