One of the first multi-day bicycle tours of the season — Cycle Zydeco in Louisiana — has been canceled for 2012.
The Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission announced at the website that the four-day bike ride across the bayou country has been put on “hiatus” so organizers can “re-evaluate the structure of the tour.”
Hiatus means an interruption, not an outright cancellation, giving many fans of the bike tour hope that it will return in 2013 …

Miss Ohio 2011 has swapped her tiara for a bicycle helmet as she makes her way around her home state on a charity bicycle tour.
Ellen Bryan is in the midst of a 850-mile, 27-day bike tour she undertook to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals of Ohio.
Apparently she never spent much time on a bicycle and is struggling a bit in the hilly parts of the state, but she's doing the miles whether she rides or walks.
Ellen said that as an intern at a TV station …

A cycling jersey designed by a Seattle area man is the butt of a lot of jokes on long bicycle rides.
Lance Oyler says that's OK with him. He created the CycleButtCrack cycling jersey to lighten the mood among riders as exhaustion or pain begins to set in.
The problem is that some cyclists might not want to be heading out at the crack of dawn behind someone wearing this jersey.
On the recent Ride Around Puget Sound (RAPSody), for instance, a woman told him that she pulled off the road earlier, saying to herself, “I'm not going to ride behind that.” She later realized it really wasn't Lance's ass hanging out of his shorts.
That's kind of how Lance got inspired for the jersey, which he sells at his website CycleButtCrack.com — the “home for cheeky cycling gear.” …

One of the unforgettable characters we met during Biking Across Kansas this year was Andrew Dickson.
He was the Scottish cross-country cyclist who learned about goatheads the hard way — by suffering numerous flats in two tires perforated with the pesky thorns.
B.A.K. essentially adopted him, and he tagged along with us through much of the state until our routes parted.
My son and I had the opportunity to talk with him in Ness City. While he described some experiences of his bicycle tour, he also told us a moving story about why he was making the journey.
He repeated the story to the 800 B.A.K. cyclists …

As someone who usually avoids crowds, I'll have to admit I was happy to see so many bicyclists riding on the John Wayne Pioneer Trail on Saturday.
The reopening of the 2.3-mile-long Snoqualmie Tunnel in July has once again made this 21-mile section of trail between Cedar Falls and Hyak a popular destination for outdoorsy folks, including families.
It proves that money spent on construction — or in this case repair — of biking and hiking trails pays off.
This was my second trip here this summer, this time with my neighbor, Kazuki. He wanted to experience the long, but mild climb up to and through the tunnel that connects western and eastern Washington, and the speedy return. …

Although summer is behind us here in the Pacific Northwest, potentially some of the year's best bike riding is still ahead.
Every weekend in September is chock full of recreational cycling events in Washington and Oregon. Most are charity bike rides that raise funds for a worthy cause.
Twenty-one bike rides are listed at the Washington Bike Ride Calendar for September. The Oregon calendar has rides every weekend and the California calendar lists nearly a dozen.
The Cascade Bicycle Club has two rides …

Tacoma, Washington-native Tejay Van Garderen is heading over to BMC Racing, the team of Tour de France winner Cadel Evans and America's George Hincapie for next season.
Van Garderen had to find a new home after his HTC-Highroad cycling team announced it would disband at the end of the year because it couldn't find a sponsor.
In making the announcement, …

Starting in October it will be possible to roll your bicycle onto a Washington State Ferry for free.
The ferry commission voted this month to remove add-on charges for bicycles for passengers who use monthly passes, multi-ride cards, or an ORCA ePurse.
In the San Juan Islands, only customers paying with a multi-ride card may travel without paying the bicycle surcharge.
Bicyclists will still have to pay …

What's the newest definition of a slow news day in Oklahoma City?
Sending a reporter out to do a story on a bicycle that's been abandoned for a year. Channel 4 did just that on Monday.
As a bicycle nut, I'll admit to noticing locked up bicycles that have been sitting around my neighborhood for a few days. I didn't think the general public would notice, though, or care.
Usually the bikes sit around near a bus stop for a few weeks then disappear….
