A new bicycle century ride that benefits World Bicycle Relief is coming to the Seattle area in 2012.
The Cascade Bicycle Club is presenting the Red-Bell 100 on June 30 next year. Registration opens Jan. 25.

64-year-old Everett man bikes nearly 12,000 miles a year
When my BikeJournal log surpassed 4,000 miles for 2011 in October, I thought I was pretty hot stuff.
Maybe some younger guys are laying down more miles on their bicycles, but I was pretty puffed for a guy adjusting to the realities of the 60s.
Then I catch this story about Dr. Art Grossman of nearby Everett, Wash. The 64-year-old doctor usually tallies just shy of 12,000 miles of bicycling a year. ….

Three brothers traveling on a Pan-American bicycle tour are giving thanks this Thanksgiving for the folks who have helped them along their journey so far.
The three Berg brothers of North Dakota are on a quest to raise funds and awareness for Habitat for Humanity along the way. [That's two of them riding their bikes into the fog along the California coast.]

What is worse than hearing rats scurrying around your hotel room getting into your bike panniers at night? It might be waking up the next morning with rat turds on the pillow.
That episode in India kind of strips the glamour off the idea of bicycling around the world in pursuit of a world record. It's just one of many experiences recounted in Mark Beaumont's book “The Man Who Cycled the World,” recently released in the US.

A kid with a fishing pole riding a bicycle is an iconic American image. It's so vivid in my mind's eye that I was surprised there was no such illustration in the Norman Rockwell database.
But the bicycle can be used for hunting, too. I'm not into hunting so it never occurred to me, but if you use a bicycle for transportation, there's no reason you can't use one to get closer to your prey.
It's easy to see why. Who hasn't surprised wildlife along the trail? This fall I surprised some turkeys on the John Wayne Pioneer Trail in eastern Washington, and I've scared up browsing deer.

Ultra marathon bicyclists will be marking next year's calendars for the Redmond-based Coup de Cascades on Aug. 14-15 after the Race Across America chose it as a qualifier this week.
Since the 2012 RAAM starts in Huntington Beach, Calif., on June 13, the Coup de Cascades will be one of the qualifying events for the 2013 RAAM.

At least 24 Cranksgiving bicycle food drives are coming up and most are taking place this final weekend before Thanksgiving.
Four of the Cranksgiving bike rides are scheduled this weekend in Washington — Olympia, Seattle and Sequim on Saturday, and Bellingham on Sunday.
In all, 36 Cranksgiving food drives were on tap this month, according to a list at New York City's Cranksgiving, the oldest food drive ride now in its 13th year.

A group promoting crosstown bikeways in San Francisco (see video at left) and a community bicycle center in Portland are among seven recipients of Bikes Belong grants this fall.
Other urban bicycle projects on the grant list include the linking of two bike lanes in Atlanta, and bikeway extensions in Memphis and Grand Rapids. Grants also are going to research studies on the economic impact of bike use in Minneapolis and Greenville, South Carolina.
In all, the bike industry association issued $62,500 to the projects. Together they show the broad scope of bicycle programs that are active in the nation's urban areas ….
