An Alabama high school student is spending the fall semester of his senior year bicycling across the US.
Glyn Glover, 19, suffers from ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Following an RV driven by his mother, he's promoting awareness about the disease on his cross-country bike trip.
Glover, a top-ranked high school football player, was diagnosed with the condition in 2009. He keeps it in check by staying on a strict diet that eliminates as much sugar, fat and processed foods as possible.
But medications he'd been taking to fight some side-effects of the disease caused a severe seizure …

Kirkland plans to buy its 5.5-mile section of the old Eastside railroad corridor that runs for 42 miles between Renton and Snohomish.
The city council approved the $5 million expenditure at a meeting Tuesday night. The final purchase would come through in March.
The abandoned railroad route could be improved into a biking and hiking trail in Kirkland, but there's talk of adding light rail or express buses to the corridor as well.
The cost of improving the abandoned railroad corridor ranges from $2.4 million to $82 million, depending on whether the path would be paved or ….

Browsing through the bicycle videos on YouTube this past weekend, I stumbled across this bike that reminds me of those low-riders outfitted with hydraulics.

Related update — The suspect in death of bicyclist Brad Nakatani on Thursday was charged on Monday afternoon with vehicular homicide and reckless driving. If convicted, the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office told the Seattle Times that the standard sentencing range is 3 to 4 years in prison.
Two sets of police and court documents — one a series of arrest records and the other an investigative report — made public by two websites shed light on two bicycle fatalities in Kirkland (WA) this year.
In the latest, the blogger at Nerds in Seattle searched the arrest records of Nathan Godwin, the Kirkland man booked on suspicion of vehicular homicide in Thursday's death of bicyclist Brad Nakatani. He found that Godwin received at least one traffic ticket a year — some quite serious — since 2004.
Meanwhile, the Cascade Bicycle Club made available on its website the complete investigative report from the bicycle fatality on Juanita Drive in July. The driver in that case was fined $42 for improper lane change. …

Update: Dec. 10, 2011 — The driver of the vehicle, Nathan Godwin, 27, of Kirkland was bound over to the King County Jail on $500,000 bond on suspicion of vehicular homicide. His blood alcohol level at the time of his arrest was .078. He told authorities that he had taken the drug Suboxone to treat his opiate addiction; drug warnings urge avoiding alcohol while on that medication.
Dec. 9, 2011 –Friends and family of the bicyclist killed in Kirkland early Thursday morning are planning a candlelight vigil at the scene of the crash from 4 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
The cyclist was identified as Bradley Nakatani, 36, of Kirkland. He was bicycling home from work as a software engineer in the Totem Lake area when he was struck by an SUV at the intersection of NE 124th Street and 132nd Avenue NE.
The driver of that SUV, identified as Nathan J. Godwin, 27, of Redmond, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. Kirkland police told the Seattle Times that they want to increase those charges to vehicular homicide …

Organizers of next year's USA Pro Cycling Challenge announced the 12 Colorado cities where the stages begin or end.
In its second year, the bike race rolls out from Aug. 20 to Aug. 26, 2012. There wasn't any doubt that the race would return to Colorado next year, but it's always good to see that this bike race and the Amgen Tour of California aren't following the route of the Tour of Missouri and Tour de Georgia into extinction.
The race will visit four new cities in 2012 — Durango, Telluride, Montrose and Boulder.
Organizers touted the choice of opening the race in the Four Corners region ……

The Arizona couple, Taura Chaw and Christiana Bruchok, plan to leave on their adventure from Usuaia, Argentina, in just a few days on their ride they're calling 2Blind2Ride.
Unfortunately, the trip has been delayed by problems shipping their tandem on an AeroMexico flight. In spite of being assured on two previous occasions that they could check the tandem as luggage (with an extra fee), the airline turned them away at the ticket counter earlier this week …

Bicycle fatalities dropped for the third year in a row in 2010, marking the fewest number of bicyclists killed in traffic accidents since the statistics were first published in 1975.
The deaths of 618 bicyclists is still too many, but the downward trend seems to be a good sign as the number of bicyclists on the road appears to be rising. The number of bicyclists injured remained constant, at 51,000, when compared to the previous year.
The numbers were included in a federal report that noted that all traffic deaths fell to 32,885 in 2010, a 2.9% drop that reflected the lowest number since 1949. …
