Last year’s Waffle course topped out at 133-miles, which included 46-miles of dirt, mud and gravel. There was 12,000 feet of elevation gain and while that particular course wasn’t the longest, it was the most painful yet. The 2019 Waffle promises much of the same dirt and some new stuff over a similar course…
Still, the route will take its riders on a ronde through North County San Diego, where it will clatter through agrarian hamlets and the Ardennes-like hills—not over classic mountains per se, but rather a never ending string of ups and downs—along single track climbs, sandy trails, and roughly paved roads carved through inland San Diego’s beautiful rural and sometimes forested backcountry.
The other option, the Canyon Belgian Wafer Ride, should top out at 74-miles with 6,500 feet of elevation gain. It takes riders up and down a shortened course, while still including many of the BWR’s most famous dirt sections and iconic climbs.
