While Spain's Alejandro Valverde is coasting to his first Grand Tour championship at the Vuelta a Espana on Sunday, Garmin-Slipstream's David Millar won the individual time trial in Toledo on Saturday.
It marked US-based Garmin's third stage victory in this Vuelta. First was Wenatchee, Washington's Tyler Farrar charging to a sprint win in Caravaca de la Cruz on Stage 11, then British Columbia's Ryder Hesjedal's survival in a breakaway to take the mountaintop finish in Alto de Velefique on Stage 12.
Except for the 2008 team time trial at the Giro d'Italia, this was the first Grand Tour victory for Great Britain's Millar since the 2006 Vuelta. Hats off to him….

Irishman Phil Deignan won Stage 18 of the Vuelta a Espana on Thursday as the Grand Tour winds down to Sunday's finish in Madrid with Alejandro Valverde still leading.
Cervelo team member Deignan attacked a 16-man breakaway to just barely beat Roman Kreuziger of Liquigas. Valverde (Caisse Epargne) maintained his 32-second lead over Robert Gesink of Rabobank.
Meanwhile, US cyclist Tom Danielson's Vuelta ended as he abandoned during the 116-mile stage to Avila …..

“The 170 kilometres between Córdoba and Puertollano were without a doubt the most uneventful ones of the Vuelta. Right at the start, the compact peloton climbed up Alto de los Villares, and as soon as they went over the top, Andalucía-CajaSur rider Jesús Rosendo attacked.
“And that was the story for the next 150 kilometres.”
Columbia's Andre Greipel won the stage, his third in this Vuelta ….

France's David Moncoutie spent 5 hours in a breakaway at the Vuelta a Espana on Saturday, much of it solo, to win the 107-mile stage that ended with a mountain top finish at Sierra Nevada.
While Alejandro Valverde followed soon enough to retain his overall lead, Garmin-Slipstream's Tom Danielson finished so far back that he lost his 4th place in the General Classification and virtually fell out of contention to 9th overall, 6:52 minutes behind the leader.
Australia's Cadel Evans was another Valverde rival who suffered a loss Saturday ….

Ryder Hesjedal survived the breakaway and mountain top finish to win Stage 12 of the Vuelta a Espana on Friday.
The 28-year-old cyclist comes from Victoria, BC, and is a member of the Garmin-Slipstream team.
In winning the 108-mile bike race to Alto de Velefique, Hesjedal becomes the first Canadian to ever win a stage at the Vuelta a Espana and the first Canadian to win a Grand Tour stage since Stephen Bauer in 1988.
He finished second in Stage 10 …

The wait is over for US cyclist Tyler Farrar. The Garmin Slipstream speedster from Wenatchee, Washington, notched up his first ever Grand Tour stage victory on Wednesday at the Vuelta a Espana.
The win came in Caravaca de la Cruz at the end of the 120-mile Stage 11 of the tour of Spain.
Team Liquigas had controlled the charging peloton in the final kilometers, but attacks by Fabian Cancellara, then Oscar Freire, upset their plans.
Farrar rocketed to the front at the close, but no one could pass him.
After a total of five 2nds and 3rds earlier this year in the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France, Farrar must be relieved that he finally has a win in a Grand Tour ..

A Spaniard finally is wearing the golden leader's jersey at the Vuelta a Espana after Alejandro Valverde made up a few seconds on former overall leader Cadel Evans on Stage 9 on Monday.
Valverde is one of the favorites to win the three-week bike race; the Caisse d'Epargne finished 2nd overall in the Vuelta in 2006.

Enough of the flatland. The 2009 Vuelta a Espana bike race entered the mountains on Sunday, and the result of the terrain change was a reorganization of contenders for the leader's golden jersey.
Australia's Cadel Evans might have shaken himself out of this year's slump as he finished in 4th place on Sunday, 44 seconds behind Stage 8 winner Damiano Cunego. Evan's effort put him in the lead by just 2 seconds.
But who also climbed in the standings? US cyclist Tom Danielson of Garmin-Slipstream bettered himself into 4th place overall, just 13 seconds behind Evans …

German cyclist Gerald Ciolek got some help from teams trying to put their sprinters across the finish line first as he won a mass sprint on Sunday as the Vuelta a Espana bike race entered Emmen, The Netherlands.
First it was Garmin Slipstream that drove the peloton to catch up to a five-man breakaway that survived for most of the 125-mile stage through The Netherlands. Then Team Columbia paced the peloton the final mile or so to the finish line.
But CyclingNews says that Columbia's Andre Greipel and Garmin's Tyler Farrar were surprised at the finish by the 22-year-old Ciolek on Team Milram as he powered past them, and a few other sprinters in the bunch, to win the stage. ….

It's no surprise that Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara, left, would excel at the individual time trial to open the 2009 Vuelta a Espana on Saturday.
The Saxo Bank time trial specialist won a similar opening day at the Tour de France in July and ended up wearing the yellow jersey for nearly the first third of the three-week race.
The big surprise has to be Wenatchee, Washington's Tyler Farrar, who finished in third place. The Garmin Slipstream sprinter finished just 12 seconds out of first place …
