Global Bicycle Race could be next extreme challenge for cyclists

An English cyclist who achieved the fastest around-the-world bike tour this past summer is organizing a new event — the Global Bicycle Race.

Vin Cox finished his solo 18,227-mile bike tour in 163 days back in August 2010. He says a race that seeks to break his Guinness World Record would create an atmosphere that draws a lot of press attention and gives cyclists a chance to feed their craving for adventure.

Cox submitted an application for recognition of the bike race to the Guinness World Records this week.

He's suggesting that the race start at Greenwich Park in London on February 18, 2012. That means the next record-setting cyclist would return to the finish just as the 2012 Summer Olympics in London is getting underway …

Mancebo, 34, was honored as the best young cyclist at the 2000 Tour de France as a member of AG2R. His climbing and ITT skills made him a contender for the overall classification contest, and he finished in top 5 at Le Tour in 2004 …

Prostate cancer group fielding team for 2012 RAAM bike race

Robert Hess is looking for a few good men — 8 to be exact — who have had prostate cancer and have the strength and stamina to ride their bicycles across the US at a torrid pace.

Hess, founder of the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project, wants to draw attention to the disease that strikes one out of six men by putting a relay cycling team in the 2012 Race Across America.

RAAM, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2011, is the world's most demanding endurance bike race. It is known for those sleep-deprived solo cyclists who spin more than 3,000 miles from coast to coast in one continuous ride. Their only break is the occasional roadside nap in a support vehicle …

Contador has some more explaining to do

Less than a week after saying he failed a doping control test because he ate tainted beef, Alberto Contador needs to come up with another alibi to explain plasticizers in another sample.

A sample taken July 20 (the day before the Chenbuteral test) showed elevated levels of plasticizers in his urine, indicating the use of a plastic IV bag, according to …

Testing the Bay Area's strongest cyclists at 2010 Mount Diablo Challenge

Mount Diablo is an isolated peak that dominates the skyline San Francisco Bay Area.

Once a year, nearly 1,000 cyclists test themselves at the Mount Diablo Challenge to see who is the Bay Area's dominant hill climber.

This past Sunday, that honor fell to Jonathan Moskowitz, 23, who powered up the mountain in 46:40. That's an average speed of 13.9 mph on the 10.8-mile long climb that rises 3,249 feet.

The fastest woman was Susannah Breen, 29, who finished in 54:16 at a pace of 11.9 mph. [More results on the jump]

You might think that the race — next year it celebrates its 30th anniversary — is suited for the young, but that's not always the case ….

One of the favorites, Phillipe Gilbert of Belgium, attacked the lead group of 50-some cyclists on the final lap, but started to fade after gaining nearly a half-minute advantage.
