No Lance and no Levi at the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race on Saturday, and no record for the men.
Durango's Todd Wells won the high-altitude mountain bike race on the legendary course in the Rocky Mountains with the second fastest time on record of 6 hours, 23 minutes.
That's about 7 minutes slower than the course record set by Levi Leipheimer in 2010. Leipheimer, who is racing this week at the Tour of Utah, in turn had beaten the previous record set by Lance Armstrong ….

Austrian ultracyclist Christoph Strasser rolled into City Dock at Annapolis shortly after midnight on Thursday to win his first Race Across America.
The 28-year-old had just finished a 2,989-mile cross-country bicycle race across the US, covering the distance in 8 days, 8 hours, and 6 minutes. That's an average speed of 14.94 mph.
As he rolled across the finish, his 19 competitors in the RAAM solo men's division (under 50) were spread along the route all the way back to somewhere between Effingham, Illinois, and Sullivan, Indiana. Two others had dropped out.
Some 10 hours after finishing, Strasser's closest challenger, US ultracyclist Mark Pattinson …..

If you're interested in the history of track cycling, you might enjoy checking out Bernd Wagner's website on Walter Rutt and the Rutt-Arena.
One of Germany's great track cyclists of his day, it's likely that he competed against America's Major Taylor on the world circuit in the early years of the 20th century. Both cycled in the grueling six-day races and other track competitions in Europe, Australia and the U.S.
Both also had velodromes built in their names. The Rutt Arena, built with an investment from the retired cyclist, was completed in 1926 in Berlin. Later, Indianapolis built a velodrome …

Some persistence and luck helped Johan Vansummeren win the 2011 edition of the Paris-Roubaix cycling classic on Sunday. It marks the first time a cyclist for a US-based team — Garmin-Cervelo — has won the epic race.
Vansummeren survived the falls, punctures and broken chains that plagued others in the peloton as they battled each other and the 27 sections of cobblestone roads spread throughout the 160-mile course. The race is considered one of the toughest in pro cycling.
In the end, the Belgian cyclist attacked a small group that included a hard-charging Fabian Cancellara (Leopard Trek) who finished in second place …

If you hear a little voice in your head saying, “He's dancing on the pedals!”, when you're tackling one of the hills around Seattle, then maybe you'd like to meet the guy who coined that phrase in person.
Versus cycling commentator Phil Liggett will be visiting Seattle next month to give a talk for the Cascade Bicycle Club. A bike ride for 45 cyclists who want to dance on the pedals with Liggett the following morning is already booked.
Liggett has been commentating the Tour de France and other cycling races since the early 1970s. His voice and “Liggettisms” are a major part of the sport for fans not only in the US, but in English speaking countries around the world ….

This summer's pro-level bicycle race across Colorado has undergone an identity and logo makeover before the inaugural event has even left the starting line.
The Quizno's Pro Challenge is now the 2011 USA Pro Cycling Challenge, as announced in Denver on Tuesday. The sandwich-maker is still the main sponsor, but from here on, the Aug. 22-28 bicycle race shall be known by its new name.
Organizers also revealed that the new tie-up of NBC Sports and Versus will have broadcast rights to the bike race with more than 25 hours of live coverage over the 7-day period ….
Update: Feb. 15, 2011 — After proposing a one-year ban on cyclist Alberto Contador, the Spanish Cycling Federation has overturned that proposal and he is free to race again.
Contador appealed their findings that he had intentionally used clenbuteral, a performance-enhancing drug, during the Tour de France. Instead, they chose to believe his story that he accidentally ingested it in some clen-tainted steak.
Contador says he's ready to ride the Volta ao Algarve on Wednesday for his new team, Saxo Bank. The International Cycling Union says it's waiting to receive the full dossier on the investigation before offering its opinion on the Spanish board's flip-flop. ….
“I've been riding my bike a lot, trying to figure out life, which is the same reason I did it to start with, so I've come full circle. I'll always ride my bike. But I'll never start on a line on a road and try to get to another line on a road faster than another guy. That's over.”
— Floyd Landis to Bonnie Ford at ESPN.com, Jan. 17, 2011 (“Floyd Landis retiring for cycling.”)
So ends the pro cycling career of Floyd Landis, 35.
At one time seen as the athlete most likely to continue America's superior role at the Tour de France after Lance Armstrong's retirement, his success turned sour in a doping scandal that earned him the moniker, “disgraced cyclist.”
