Trek supplying bicycles for Team Astana

When Tailwind Sports decided to pull the plug on its pro cycling team instead of finding a sponsor to replace Discovery Channel, the cyclists weren't the only ones left out in the cold.

Trek Bicycles had been the official bike for the Discovery team, and before that the US Postal Service team. The bike company that helped put Lance Armstrong in yellow seven times was suddenly left without a team.

So with Levi Leipheimer, Alberto Contador and other Disco teammates, as well as manager Johan Bruyneel, jumping over to Astana, I suppose it made sense for Trek to supply bicycles to the Kazahkstan-based team…

“Going out of business” bike sale at eBay for Tailwind Sports

Tailwind Sports is auctioning off 17 “slightly used” team bikes ridden by the likes of George Hincapie, Egoi Martinez, Jani Brajkovic and other Discovery Channel team members in the past year.

No. Nothing from Alberto Contador or Levi Leipheimer.

Most of the bicycles are Trek Madone 6.9's, although there are a few Trek Equinox TTX bikes, including one sized “large” for Hincapie. Bidding starts as low as $6,200, but most bikes are between $8,200 and $12,200 …

New finish for 2008 RAAM — Annapolis

The Race Across America is going to be a little shorter this year after organizers decided to move the bicycle race finish line to Annapolis, Maryland, from its traditional finish in Atlantic City.

The change won't make that much difference to the sleep-deprived and strength-depleted endurance bicyclists as they cross the finish line, however. The 2008 route is 3,008 miles, only 34 miles shorter than last year's race.

In its 26th year, the world's most famous endurance cycling race is scheduled to start at the Oceanside pier on June 8 for solo competitors and June 11 for teams. Last year's solo winner, Jure Robic, wrapped up his ride in 8 days, 19 hours, and 33 minutes …

T-Mobile drops pro cycling sponsorship; team takes the High Road

Pity poor George Hincapie. His teams can't seem to keep their sponsors.

First, the Discovery Channel announced that it would not renew its sponsorship for the Tailwind Sports team of which he had been a member since the late '90s. Then Tailwind finally gave up looking for a sponsor and disbanded.

Hincapie jumped over to the team that Deutsche Telekom and affiliate T-Mobile had sponsored since 1991. T-Mobile announced today that it was pulling the plug …..

UCI-level bicycle racing in Colorado and Pennsylvania next year

Two new UCI-level bicycle races are on tap in the US for 2008, joining three regulars — Tour of California, Tour de Georgia and Tour of Missouri.

The new bicycle races are planned for Colorado and Pennsylvania, both deserving locales considering their history in domestic cycling.

The Colorado Stage International Cycle Classic is a three-stage bicycle race that incorporates the Vail Pass Time Trial course from the old Coors Classic. The other two stages comprise a road race from Breckenridge to Beaver Creek and a circuit race between East Vail and West Vail…

Contador and Leipheimer to Astana

Updated: The cyclists on the Discovery Channel pro cycling team are scattering to the four winds.

Spain's Alberto Contador, right, and California's Levi Leipheimer, left, have both confirmed they're following team manager Johan Bruyneel to Kazakhstan-based Astana.

Those are some big guns for Astana. Contador won the 2007 Tour de France and Leipheimer finished in 3rd. The Santa Rosa resident also won the Tour of California in 2007 and won the US National Championships this fall …

Final results for 2006 Tour de Asterisk; Pereiro in yellow

So Oscar Pereiro is the new winner of the 2006 Tour de France* after cycling officials stripped Floyd Landis of the title and handed it to the Spaniard 15 months after the finish of the race.

Standing on the podium in Paris on July 24, 2006, I'm sure the only dream of a Tour de France win for the Caisse d'Epargne rider involved efforts in 2007 or 2008.

Little did he know that in less than a week, the beaming American standing on the top step of the podium would be accused of doping and eventually be stripped of his yellow jersey. ……

Bruyneel lands at Astana; Leipheimer and Contador to follow?

Discovery Channel team manager Johan Bruyneel is set to take over a similar job at the dope-plagued Astana pro cycling team.

For those keeping score, four cyclists — Alexander Vinokourov, Andrey Kashechkin, Eddy Mazzoleni and Matthias Kessler — on Astana were implicated in doping allegations last year. Astana left the 2007 Tour de France in disgrace after the charges against Vinokourov.

Bruyneel was sought out to use his wit and wiles to win some trophies for the Kazakhstan-based cycling team, as well as implement anti-doping measures employed in 2007 by Team CSC …

2007 Mount Diablo Challenge bike ride

There's a little ol' 10-mile bike ride that's held every October in Central California that draws hundreds of bicyclists. In spite of the ride's short distance, it takes the fastest rider more than 45 minutes to reach the finish line; for others it can take more than two hours.

It's the Mount Diablo Challenge, a 10.8-mile slog up a San Francisco Bay Area landmark that gains 3,240 feet. Cyclists suffer a 6.9% gradient over the last four miles.

On Sunday, 976 bicyclists made it past Devil's Elbow and all the way to the summit. I tip my helmet to all of them, from Christopher Phipps, 37, of San Francisco who finished in 45:48 (14.1 mph) to Paul Phillips, 41, of Alamo, who crossed the finish line in 3 hours 5 minutes…

Is Tour of America for real?

I missed a couple of things while I recovered from the narcotic stupor following my prostate surgery. One was coverage of the Interbike 2007 trade show. Another was George Hincapie's announcement that he was joining T-Mobile cycling team.

I also missed the unveiling of the 2008 Tour of America — a Tour de France-style cross-country bicycle race from New York to San Francisco.

Overall, it sounds like a cool idea for a coast-to-coast stage bike race. Dammit, if the French can do it, why not the Americans? But some of the details are just mind-boggling. And after reading some coverage from VeloNews (Friday's Foaming Rant “Detour of America) and Bicycling (The Boulder Report “Tour Day What?“), I wondered if we'll ever see such a race….
