Two cyclists were struck and killed by a Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputy whose vehicle crossed a double-yellow line on Sunday.
Dead are Kristy Gough, 31, of Oakland, and Matt Peterson, 30, of San Francisco. The highly ranked amateur cyclists (Gough was a pro triathlete as well) were in a group of at least four that were riding on Stevens Pass Road, a popular road for cyclists.
Peterson died at the scene and Gough died after being airlifted to Stanford University Hospital. According to news reports, dozens of cyclists gathered there …

Alley cat bike races are unsanctioned urban street races where cyclists zip around their city to be the first to find a series of destinations. Shortest distance in the quickest time wins the day.
The New York Times on Sunday reported on the “sheer anarchic fun of the race” in an …

Most of the snow-bike riders in the Human-Powered Iditarod have trickled into McGrath, the 350-mile checkpoint for those on the way to Nome and the end of the ride for about a dozen.
The latest cyclist to roll into the small town on the banks of the Kuskokwim River Saturday afternoon was Jill Homer, the author of the Up in Alaska blog. She completed the trip in 6 days, 2 hours and 20 minutes.
She recounted some of her experiences on the race message board on Friday. It's difficult to imagine the hardships and exhaustion she and the other cyclists experience. For instance, Jill said at one point she “kept literally falling asleep and falling off my bike.” More …

You snow-cycling enthusiasts probably already know about this, but the Iditarod Trail Invitational starts this Sunday.
Billed as the world's longest human-powered race, the event starts in Anchorage and follows the famous Iditarod sled dog race course across a frozen landscape to either McGrath — 350 miles, or Nome — 1,110 miles.
Of the 46 entrants, 12 are going by bicycle to McGrath and 10 are riding their bikes to Nome. The rest are hiking or skiing …

Calfee Designs is supplying its bamboo bikes to a California-based bicycle racing team composed exclusively of vegans.
OrganicAthlete launched its cycling team in 2007 and five of its athletes will be riding the bamboo bikes this year.
Although he experimented with bamboo about 10 years ago, Craig Calfee has been building the bamboo bikes at his Santa Cruz County shop for three or four years. The bamboo tubing is bound with a hemp-fiber wrap that helps create a green, renewable bicycle…

(Left to right: High Road, Slipstream, BMC)
When the Discovery Channel pro cycling team closed up shop at the end of last season, I was afraid my days of rooting for a US-based “home team” at the major European races were over.
Instead, I'll have to choose from three: High Road Sports, BMC Racing and Slipstream Chipotle-H3O.
High Road Sports is the team that T-Mobile abandoned after the disclosure of the team's long history of doping became public last year. Earlier this month, the team of George Hincapie moved its HQ from Germany to San Luis Obispo, making it the only US-based ProTour team.
Then the UCI government body of pro cycling announced it would include two US-based Pro Continental teams — BMC and Slipstream — among the 15 continental teams allowed to compete on the international level on the UCI ProTour. Now, instead of no teams, I have three. …

There's no evidence of widespread disenchantment with professional bicycling if you check out the 2008 USA Cycling Professional Tour calendar.
We'll witness 44 days of pro cycling in the US in 2008, up from 32 days in 2007. Sixteen races in 2008, up from 13 in 2007.
Most of the increase is due to the addition of multi-day tours in Pennsylvania and Colorado; it's good to see the Tour of California, Tour de Georgia and Tour of Missouri are making return engagements as well. The calendar also features 10 one-day bicycle races. …

Several big names in recent cycling lore probably won't be competing in 2008 because of continued appeals of doping allegations or retirement after facing suspensions. There is, however, a surprise return engagement. Let me wrap up some highlights:
Floyd Landis, who was banned from pro cycling until January 2009, is appealing that decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Switzerland-based panel is the last stop for the American bicycle racer, whose troubles started in August 2006, soon after the conclusion of the Tour de France.
A hearing lasting up to five days with CAS is tentatively scheduled for March 19 in New York City. Unlike his USADA appeal, it will not be open to the public

What seemed like a brilliant idea last week landed with a resounding thud at eBay on Thursday when the 17 bicycles being auctioned off by Tailwind Sports received nary a bid.
The bicycles, mostly Madone 6.9 road bikes or Equinox TTX time trial machines, carried Discovery Channel colors, the sponsor that ended its association with Tailwind this year. Tailwind gave up on finding a new sponsor and put these bikes out to bid.
Even though the individual Treks had pedigree papers identifying their authenticity and pro riders who used them, apparently no one thought that cache was worth plunking down up to the $12,200 starting bid — not even for George Hincapie's time trial bike (above). …
