If you're a cyclo-cross fan, then you'll want to check out the Universal Sports website on Sunday where a same-day delay video feed of the Cyclocross World Championships will be shown.

Check back to cycling schedule page at UniversalSports.com for times and details about the webcast.

Stella Artois beer commercial uses vintage bicycling theme

Watching the Golden Globes award show the other night, I was surprised to see this excellent Belgian beer commercial that tells the story of two brothers in a circa 1930s tandem bicycle race.

Entitled “The Race,” the 1:30-minute commercial for Stella Artois looks like it came directly from the pages of a book on the history of cycling in the Alps and Pyrenees, right down to the dusty roads and stone buildings.

Searching around, I discovered that the footage was shot on the Mediterranean island of Majorca (Mallorca in Spanish). The extras were cycling fanatics from the mountainous island, and the photos at the end of the piece came from a widow whose husband was a local cycling legend …

Vuelta a Espana starts in the Netherlands, hops to Spain

Usually by the time the Vuelta a Espana rolls around, I'm burned out on the Euro pro cycling scene.

The three-week race around Spain follows the Tour de France by 3 or 4 weeks. That's when all the Tour's post-race doping news is hitting its stride, and I'm fed up with the sport and the cheating cyclists.

Who knows whether this year will be different. The course for the Vuelta is certainly unusual, as it starts in the Dutch city of Assen and the bike race's first three days take place in the Netherlands. Then the peloton passes into Belgium before taking a day off to travel to Tarragona, Spain, to continue the race …

For one day, you can bike with Team Columbia

Imagine living in San Luis Obispo, California, and having Team Columbia based in your hometown.

Although cyclists George Hincapie, left, Mark Cavendish, Kim Kirchen, Michael Rogers and others race and train around the world, there must be times when they ride on the local roads around San Luis Obispo.

One of those occasions will occur on a Saturday the week before the Tour of California, when team owner Highroad Sports sponsors Pedal to Pier, beginning at 8 a.m. Feb. 7, at Avila Beach.

Mere mortals (recreational cyclists) can join members of Team Columbia …

Oregon Pro Cycling Classic is the old Mt. Hood classic

The loss of the Tour de Georgia for next year was sad news. But the Oregon Pro Cycling Classic is setting out to prove that there's good news for the sport of cycling as well.

Known for the past six years as the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic, the race is undergoing a makeover that will expand it to seven days and raise its difficulty in an attempt to rival the Amgen Tour of California.

The $50,000 event is listed on the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar from May 11 – 17, 2009 …

Mexican bike team repeats win at El Tour; 10 cyclists struck by car

2008 Tour de Tucson finish

A member of the P&S Specialized team of Hermosillo, Mexico, won the El Tour de Tucson on Saturday in a bicycling event that was marred by a hit-and-run collision involving 10 cyclists.

David Salomon, 28, won the 109-mile event in 4:20:35, the same time as teammates Carlos Hernandez, 32, (last year's winner) and Eduardo Lugo.

The 26th annual El Tour was held under sunny Arizona skies and drew some 8,600 cyclists to participate in the race or the shorter distance recreational bike rides …

NBC airs 2008 Tour of Missouri show on Saturday

The 2008 Tour of Missouri and the Garmin-Chipotle pro cycling team will be featured on NBC Sports on Saturday.

The Nov. 15 episode of Jeep World of Adventure Sports begins its so-called “green initiative” to raise awareness of global environmental issues.

One segment is a behind-the-scenes look at Team Garmin during the Tour of Missouri that rolled out Sept. 8-14.

This should be interesting to cycling fans as Garmin's Christian Vande Velde, above, won the championship this year …

Former pro cyclist Saul Raisin runs New York Marathon

Every so often I hear about former pro cyclist Saul Raisin achieving a new goal that amazes me. The 25-year-old from Dalton, Georgia, is truly an inspiration.

Judged one of the rising stars on the pro peloton, Saul crashed in a race in Italy in 2006 and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He fell into a coma that required brain surgery. He underwent months of rehabilitation.

That hasn't stopped him from continuing to ride his bicycle, although now he rides for charity and not profit. This past weekend he added a new pursuit, running, to his resume and completed the New York City Marathon …

Greenville to dedicate bike path to George Hincapie

If Lance Armstrong has a bike path named for him in Austin, then it's only fitting that George Hincapie would have one dedicated to him in his hometown of Greenville, South Carolina.

That's what the city of Greenville is doing this Saturday at 11 a.m.

A recently completed section of the Swamp Rabbit Trail — named for the railroad that used to serve the area — will be renamed the Hincapie Path.

Hincapie will be on hand for the ceremony and an inaugural ride along the 2-mile paved rail-to-trail …

Back to the future in the pro cycling peloton

Fire up the flux capacitor, Doc. It's going to feel like we're traveling through time for the 2009 pro cycling season.

Here's a rundown of some flashes from the past — Lance Armstrong, Ivan Basso, Alexandre Vinokourov, and Floyd Landis — who say they'll be racing next year.

First we learned that Lance Armstrong, 37, was coming out of retirement to seek another victory at the Tour de France. Now he says the Giro d'Italia will be his main target, perhaps to give ease to teammate Alberto Contador who would like to win another Tour of his own …
