Collegiate cycling powerhouse first to offer minor in bicycling

The president of Lees-McRae College sees the future and it is bicycles.

The small college in the hills of Banner Elk, North Carolina, will become the first in the nation to offer a minor in Bicycle Studies when the program is launched this spring.

Already an athletic cycling powerhouse with 10 national championships since 2003, now bicycling will roll into the academic realm with course offerings for careers on and off the bike.

Students seeking a minor in Bicycle Studies will learn bicycle history and the principles of bicycling, as well as …..

Women in Uganda choosing careers in bicycling

Women in an isolated district of southwestern Uganda are learning to ride bicycles to make their daily chores easier and to even earn money as bicycle tour guides and mechanics.

The program called Ride 4 a Woman in Buhoma was set up with the assistance of US-based nonprofit One Street to offer local women the opportunity for more social and economic power.

It's just another example where bicycles can be used to improve the quality of life.

Ride 4 a Woman is located near the aptly named Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, which is the home to the mountain gorilla and a destination of eco-tourists from around the world. The project rents bicycles and sends tours through the park and the surrounding countryside …

Ohio woman's inspirational recovery from bike collision

Countless times we read about a bicyclist injured in a collision with a car, consider it a blessing the person wasn't killed, then never give it another thought.

The Cincinnati Enquirer, however, published a thought-provoking story this weekend about the suffering and rehabilitation facing a young woman, Alison Delgado, who nearly died after she was hit by a car in October.

What makes the story so inspirational is how Alison, and her husband, Tim, [that's them at left] have faced the hardships together. What makes it so moving is that Tim was the physician on the med-evac helicopter called in to transport from one hospital to another the unidentified bike crash victim, who he soon discovered to be his wife. …

Alert bicyclist helps save lost dog in Pennsylvania

Bicyclists are usually the victims in stories involving dogs, as they're either getting chased or bitten by loose canines.

Here's a story about a bicyclist who helped rescue a lost dog, which is why Bill Myers is considered a hero among some people around Carlisle, Pennsylvania, these days.

The part-German shepherd, named Daisy Mae (at left), had escaped into the cold farm country from a vehicle a week earlier. She was being transported from her home in West Virginia to a rescue shelter in New Jersey after her owners had to move and could no longer care for her …

The bicycle movie that broke away from the pack

Peter Yates died on Sunday. You might not know the name, but you'll recognize the name of one of the movies he directed — “Breaking Away.”

Although it's considered a bicycling or sports movie, I think most people like it for the other theme that runs through it, that of growing up.

It's certainly my favorite movie, as much for the cycling scenes as the interactions between the friends facing their first year after high school with their whole lives in front of them. It's a time the characters Dave (Dennis Christopher), Mike (Dennis Quaid), Cyril (Daniel Stern) and Moocher (Jackie Earle Haley) would probably never forget …

Playing with my food: the Giro d'Pasta

My mother told me never to play with my food, but I couldn't resist after cooking up a batch of bicycle pasta last night.

Most of the pastas cooked up white, but one out of 20 or 30 turned out red. That reminded me of the maglia rosa at the Giro d'Italia, so I recreated this 2010 scene on my plate of Ivan Basso leading the peloton.

I'm no Graham Watson; this is the best I could come up with. Later I tossed this gruppetto into a bowl, stirred in some chopped garlic, parmesan cheese, vinegar, and a dash of chain oil ….

Top bicycling headlines for the upcoming year

Some bicycling headlines I'd like to read in 2011:

Motor vehicle ban in Black Hawk, Colorado: The newly elected city council in Black Hawk, Colorado, reinstates bicycles and bans motor vehicles from city streets. Cars and tour buses must park in a huge lot on the edge of town where bicycle rickshaws pick up passengers and carry them to the casinos. Montreal's Bixi bike-share platform opens a business there;

50 states pass laws to criminalize crashes with bicyclists: Every state passes a law making it illegal to kill or injure a person on a bicycle. Excuses such as “Uh, I didn't see him,” or “I was answering a text from my friend,” automatically doubles the jail sentences. Saying that “The new car smell made me sleepy” earns a life sentence ….

The most read stories at Biking Bis blog in 2010

This was quite a year for bicycling news. Doping allegations against Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador, and a bicycling ban in Black Hawk, Colorado, were among the biggest stories of 2010.

I like to go back and check what stories, on a month-to-month basis, got the most hits at the Biking Bis blog. Some of these stories are spun from the big news of the day, while others simply inform bicycle enthusiasts who's televising a particular race or where to sign up for a ride.

Here they are:

January: “2010 Tour Down Under bike race schedule and TV coverage” — This essentially sorted out the times and broadcast schedules ….

2011 Urban Assault Rides in 10 cities; bypass Seattle, Portland and Berkeley

The Urban Assault Rides that pit 2-person teams against each other in fanciful bicycling contests will return to 10 cities in 2011.

They're the same cities that hosted rallies in 2010, except Seattle, Portland and Berkeley have been dropped from the list.

The New Belgium Brewery-sponsored Urban Assault Rides feature bicycle-oriented challenges at a series of checkpoints across the host city. The teams — male, female, coed and family — compete in such trials as bicycle jousting, newspaper throw, and human wheelbarrow.

The cities and dates for 2011 are …

“Bicycle Man” overcomes challenges for another bike giveaway

There are a lot of news stories this holiday season about different organizations giving away bicycles to children in need, and I tip my hat to all of them.

But year in and year out, the effort that catches my attention is the work done by Moses Mathis, the so-called “Bicycle Man” of Fayetteville, North Carolina.

The 72-year-old man has been giving away bicycles every Christmas for the past 20 years to children in the poor communities of North Carolina's sand hills. He told News14Carolina:

“I'll see the kids and the parents, and the hugs and the kisses and the thank you's. … That's what it's all about.” …
