As we roll into the end of 2008, it might be a good time to check out some bicycle-themed calendars for 2009.
Of all the offerings, one of the most popular — at least for browsing — is the Cycle Passion 2009 calendar produced in Germany. The calendar offers photos of professional female cyclists unencumbered by typical cycling garb.
Other calendars feature Seattle's legion of women cyclists, legendary mountain biker Jacquie Phelan, bike culture expressed in exotic locales, and the annual cycling scenery masterpiece by Graham Watson.
That's Sabine Spitz, above, on the cover of next year's Cycle Passion calendar. Among her other accomplishments, the German cyclist was mountain bike champion at the 2008 Beijing Olympics (see the mountain bike on the floor behind her?) …

Some 5,300 bicycle riders helped set a new record for an athletic fund-raising event by collecting $35 million in pledges for the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge bike ride in August.
The money went to the Jimmy Fund for adult and pediatric cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
Organizers of the 29th annual bike ride across Massachusetts are particularly proud of their accomplishment because the entire amount raised goes to the charity; the sponsors underwrite the cost of producing the bike ride and provide in-kind services along with the 2,800 volunteers. …

If you're stocking up on bicycle gear for the holidays, there's an online store where part of your purchase will provide some goodness in Africa.
Ultra cyclist Rob Lucas is launching a campaign to raise money for World Bicycle Relief from UltraRob.com, his commercial website that sells cycling and other outdoor gear.
Today through Christmas, Rob has pledged to donate 10% of his website's earnings to World Bicycle Relief, a charity that supplies bicycles to aid workers in Africa …

If you're off your bicycle for a while this coming weekend, then you might want to head over to the Bicycle Touring Pro website and check out the bicycle lifestyle event there.
Webmaster Darren Alff has put together a two-day schedule of articles, interviews, videos and a live Q & A session dealing with bicycle travel, commuting and adopting a bicycle lifestyle.
While Darren has done the bulk of the work on the project, entitled, “Bicycle Travel as a Modern Lifestyle Choice,” he has called upon some other bicycling enthusiasts to contribute. Among these are articles from the Adventure Cycling Association, Chris Guillebeau, Joe “Metal Cowboy” Kurmaskie, …

There are hectic days when the weather is nice, but I just can't get out for a long bike ride. That's when I jump on my mountain bike to ride some trails and finish up with a stop at a local grocery to pick up something for dinner — all in under an hour.
Part of the bicycle route is on an unassuming dirt path that veers into a second-growth forest behind some homes in neighboring Newcastle.
I never thought much about this dirt trail that dead-ends at a stairway high above May Creek until recently. That's when I found out that this is no ordinary dirt trail.
Merely 1.7 miles long, the May Creek Trail is the abandoned route of a narrow-gauge railroad of the 1800s that connected the lucrative old coalfields of old Newcastle to docks in Seattle. …

A thief who stole a bicycle posted on Craigslist was hooked in an impromptu sting operation when he re-listed the bicycle in another town.
The Tacoma, Washington, man was hoisted by his own petard, as they say.
The drama started when Robert Hill of Bainbridge Island realized that the guy who just pedaled his Cervelo R3 bicycle, valued at $2,700, down the driveway for a test ride was not coming back ….

This cycling video is the iconic testamonial to why it's not a good idea to celebrate too early. You've probably seen it dozens of times, but you've never seen this face on the come-from-behind winner until now.
It's such a classic and its message is so clear that the Obama-Biden campaign is using it to encourage supporters not to let up until after they cross the “finish line” on Tuesday.
I spotted it on Hardball with Chris Matthews on MSNBC Wednesday night and got a good laugh. It's very appropriate. Here's what Matthews said about it …

Every so often someone will send me an e-mail to learn more about my recovery from prostate surgery.
This weekend, it is 72-year-old Peter Kierulf of Norway. He wrote that he's going in for prostate surgery on Monday. He'd like to hear from other men who have undergone the minimally invasive robotic procedure, and he wants to know how long before they started bicycling again.
That fact that doctors have judged it safe to perform surgery on Peter is a testament to his health and fitness — probably from his years on the bike. But I can relate to his anxiety….

Remember those real estate agents who took prospects on housing tours by bicycle?
The developers of a swank new housing development in Manhattan (211 Elizabeth) are going them one better by supplying bicycles to purchasers of their one- and two-bedroom condominiums.
The bicycle is made by A Black Bike, a Dutch bicycle company based in New York City. They look like the stylish workhorses I've seen in photos from Amsterdam …

Imagine racing your mountain bike on a downhill course. Now imagine being legally blind.
Now you're imagining Bobby McMullen's life.
“The Way Bobby Sees It” (check out the trailer at left) is McMullen's story and is one of three feature films that will be presented at the Olympia Bicycle Film Festival later this month …
