Bicyclist Ed Farrar's battle to recover from crash

The Wenatchee World has published an inspiring story about bicyclist Ed Farrar's rehabilitation from spinal injuries he suffered in October when a car crossed the centerline and crashed into him head-on.

People in central Washington know Farrar, 57, as a respected surgeon with Wenatchee Orthaepedics. Cycling fans know him as the father of Tyler Farrar, 24, a sprinter on Garmin Chipotle.

Some 13 weeks after the collision, Farrar has returned home and is getting used to life in a wheelchair. Everyone agrees that the crash could have killed him, but a set of circumstances combined to accelerate this treatment …

Crashing out 10 feet from my driveway; January bike ride stats

The first thing that came into my mind as I lay in the street under my bicycle on Friday was, “This is a hell of a way to start a bike ride.”

Then I realized I couldn't clip out of my right pedal, my right hip and elbow hurt like the dickens and my glasses were about a foot from my face.

I finally disengaged myself from my bike, stood up, picked up the stuff that had fallen off me and my bike, and limped back to the house. Fortunately, I had fallen within 10 feet of my driveway. Also, no one had witnessed it …

Achieving long-distance bicycling success in “The Ride of Your Life”

David Rowe says he was taking the leap from recreational cyclist to ultra long-distance cyclist when he rode the arduous Torture 10,000 century in Oregon a few years ago.

He wasn't surprised by the length or elevation gain — more than 13,000 feet. What surprised him was seeing so many sag wagons filled with the bikes of participants who had thrown in the towel.

“It was clear that they didn't think about what they were getting into.”

So David set out to write the recently published eBook “The Ride of Your Life.” It covers an aspect of cycling that doesn't get the attention it deserves — mental preparation …

Commuter bicycle design contest winner

The Bicycle Design blog has announced the winner in its “commuter bike for the masses” design competition, and it's the ThisWay bike designed by Torkel Dohmer.

Blogger James Thomas came up with the idea of a contest to ferret out some bicycle designs that would coax non-cyclists out of their cars and onto the bike lanes for commuting to work.

The lightweight bike would be made of composite materials and hydro-formed aluminum with built-in LED lights in the front and back powered by a battery that recharged by solar cells. There's also space for a briefcase on the back. And it has a roof …

Stella Artois beer commercial uses vintage bicycling theme

Watching the Golden Globes award show the other night, I was surprised to see this excellent Belgian beer commercial that tells the story of two brothers in a circa 1930s tandem bicycle race.

Entitled “The Race,” the 1:30-minute commercial for Stella Artois looks like it came directly from the pages of a book on the history of cycling in the Alps and Pyrenees, right down to the dusty roads and stone buildings.

Searching around, I discovered that the footage was shot on the Mediterranean island of Majorca (Mallorca in Spanish). The extras were cycling fanatics from the mountainous island, and the photos at the end of the piece came from a widow whose husband was a local cycling legend …

Bicycle made from plastic bottles wins Google-sponsored award

When Mr. McQuire offered Ben Braddock one word of advice — “plastics” — in The Graduate, I'm sure he wasn't talking about bicycles.

But a team of students from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, created a bicycle made from recycled plastic bottles to win the Juicy Ideas contest supported in part by Google.

The four industrial design students from ASU competed against 268 teams from 28 colleges to create something of value in 10 days from a “throwaway” item and post a YouTube video (above) that explained their product.

The winners — Ryan Klinger, of Huntersville, NC; Andrew Drake of Gaithersburg, Md.; Spencer Price of Louisville, Ky.; and Justin Henry of San Diego — will get a trip to Google headquarters in Mountain View …

Pedal-powered snowplows clear driveways and paths

The first legitimate snowfall in my area got me to thinking about pedal-powered snowplows.

They have lots of advantages, primarily by transforming the act of snow-shoveling into a good workout for your legs instead of a back-breaking chore. Here are three good ones.

As for this one at left, it's effective as well. Kevin Blake (MrPlowKevin), an engineer at Trek, created it for last year's Specialized Innovate or Die contest. He used parts from an old riding lawnmower and old bicycles and two store-bought snow shovels.

The plow didn't win the contest (a water filtration bike did), but it certainly looks like a useful machine …

Tendencies of states where people search “bicycle”

States where “bicycle” is a popular Google search word rank higher in literacy, lower in obesity, and tended to vote for Obama in 2008.

Although this red-blue US map may conjure up flashbacks from the 2008 presidential election, it actually shows states where people most frequently Googled the word “bicycle,” with red being the most, blue the least, and purple in between.

A programmer has taken this application one step further and created StateStats, which links these results with other ways of ranking states, such as with education, obesity and age
