All out goathead assault in Idaho

The bane of western cyclists — puncture vine — is coming under full-fledged attack in Idaho.

The non-native weed is also known as goathead, ground bur-nut, caltrop, Texas sandbur, and f*#%ing things, as in, “One of those f*#%ing things just flatted my bike tire!”

The seed forms a spiked pod (above) that sits on the ground waiting for its next bicycling …

Not ready for Interbike

I wouldn't try this at home, kids. The bike rider's helmetless head hitting the pavement is just half the problem; how about getting speared in the gut by the handlebars?

Otherwise, it looks like a sweet ride for tooling around some flat beach towns.

I ran across the image at “Instructables: Step by Step Collaboration” while I was searching for …

Bikes, not bombs, to Iraq

A group of Santa Cruz, California, bicyclists has raised $10,000 to help equip the Iraq Junior National Cycling Team with bikes, uniforms, and other cycling gear.

Cyclists for Cultural Exchange began its Iraq project after board member Matthew Werner saw a picture of the team training, reports the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

“There was a picture with barbed wire in …

Bicycles aid Hurricane Katrina victims and refugees

Bicycles are playing a part in helping people who found their lives turned inside-out by Hurricane Katrina.

Clubs are offering fund-raising rides, businesses are offering jobs, and both are collecting and distributing free bicycles (left) to give refugees from the storm a set of wheels to get from one place to another.

There are even stories of people who used …

Traffic ticket adds insult to injury for bicyclist; city changes law

(UPDATED)A bicyclist in Toledo, Ohio, didn't get any comfort from police after he was struck by a pickup truck. Instead, he was issued a traffic ticket.
On Tuesday, the Toledo City Council proposed an ordinance that allows adults to ride their bikes on some city sidewalks. …

Dogs need to chase bikes, not ride on them

Here's something I ran across, thanks to the Tournez a gauche bicycle weblog.

A Japanese company, Koko Bicycles, makes this commuting bike with a front basket and a small compartment on the top tube to carry a small animal, like a dog.

Aren't dogs supposed to chase bikes? What if a dog chases this bike, then sees a dog …

President Bush is on his bike: Do not disturb

I printed a “Bicycle Quote” last week made by President Bush's spokesman Scott McClellan after the White House and Congress were evacuated when a small aircraft mistakenly entered restricted airspace.
It didn't end there.
The next day, McClellan had to field more questions about the event and reasons why Bush, who was riding his mountain bike at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, was not immediately …

Spinning yarns on wheels; the Bicycle Film Festival

My idea of a bicycle movie has always been “Breaking Away”: town kid grows up and beats college kids at their own race — the Little Indy 500.

Or “American Flyers”: kid grows up and beats brother in bicycle race — after the big brother suffers a brain aneurysm.

Or “Pee-Wee's Big Adventure:” I actually have no idea what that was about.

In any case, you won't find these films at the Bicycle Film Festival in NYC …

Bicycle is best invention in 200 years, says UK

BBC Radio took a poll recently on what was the best invention since 1800.

The bicycle came in at #1 with 59% of the vote. It was chosen for being an ecologically sound means of transportation, its simple design, and its widespread use.

I couldn't agree more. The ability to get from one place to another more quickly than walking …

Tricycle that SHIFTs into a bicycle

This trike bike looks like it's right out of the Jetsons!
Three Purdue University industrial designers developed this children's tricycle that essentially turns into a bicycle as it is propelled forward. It's such a cool idea that it won the first prize out of 853 entries at the 9th International Bicycle Design Competition in Taiwan. That's worth $15,000.
I'd have to see …
