Two “stars” of Charles Kuralt series are still helping cyclists

Nobody in recent memory could report a human interest story better than the late CBS correspondent Charles Kuralt. His “On the Road …” reports are noteworthy not only for briefly shining the spotlight on unheralded Americans, but also for the simplicity and directness of his writing.

In more than 600 segments of “On the Road,” at least twice Kuralt touched on bicycling. One was about June Curry, the Cookie Lady of Afton, Virginia. Another was Jethro Mann, the bicycle man. …

RAAM cyclists roll to the finish

Searing desert heat; stiff Kansas winds; long grades and steep hills; and night after day after night cycling is coming to an end for the bicyclists in the Race Across America.

The teams started rolling across the finish line at the Boardwalk in Atlantic City on Monday, 3,042 miles and about 5 1/2 days after leaving Oceanside, California. The solo riders began coasting across the finish line last night, nine days after leaving the West Coast. …

Gentlemen: Straddle your bikes! Lance Armstrong at Indianapolis 500

This publicity photo strikes me as one of the most bizzare I've seen in a while. In light of the Giro d'Italia, it's maybe something that could have been composed by filmmaker Frederico Fellini.

To publicize Lance Armstrong driving the pace car Sunday for the Indianapolis 500, Armstrong posed next to the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 he'll drive. Behind him, 33 Indy race car drivers stood astride their Trek bicycles. …

Network name change: OLN vs. Versus

When you plop down to watch the Tour de Georgia on Cyclysm today (4-6 p.m. ET) at the Outdoor Life Network, be informed that Comcast-owned network OLN is changing its name to Versus this fall.

Interesting that a network that originated with field and stream shows would take a word from ancient Latin as its new moniker. …

Classic bike show and sale in Michigan

When I lived in California, I had a neighbor who bought a '60s vintage Chevy, parked it in his garage, and proceeded to take it apart, clean or replace each piece, and put it back together again.

For those who do that to classic bicycles, there's a show and sale for you. The 26th annual Ann Arbor/Saline Classic Bicycle Show and Swap Meet convenes Saturday. …
