And the envelope, please.
Boulder Sports Research has announced its list of the top 100 specialty bicycle shops in the US. The best out of 5,100 retailers.
But first, let's make it understood that the voting was done by sales representatives from 7 leading bike makers and 5 accessory makers. That means your favorite, dusty, hole-in-the-wall bike shop might not have made the list. …

Just when I think I'll be wearing my rainjacket for the rest of my bicycling life, we get hit with a day like this — sunny, temp in the high 40s, calm, did I mention sunny?
After suffering through weeks of windstorms, snowstorms, freezing temperatures and rain, lots of rain, cyclists up here by the hundreds emerged into the sunshine for their rides on Saturday.
Here's what I enjoyed on today's bike ride …

We're not talking entry level bike mechanics here, although that job is demanding enough. A Washington state bicycle advocacy group and the nation's leading bicycle racing publication are looking for new bosses.
VeloNews is looking for an editor-in-chief. The position oversees the biweekly bike racing magazine and website. The editor is in charge of pretty much everything and everybody on the news side of the publication. The successful candidate must be deadline and detail-oriented.
The position is based in Boulder and some travel to worldwide cycling events is anticipated. …

Where is it that a main thoroughfare has stop signs, but private driveways have none? At car crossings for the Burke-Gilman trail in Lake Forest Park near Seattle.
For years, bicyclists on the heavily used paved trail have had to stop at numerous driveways and minor street crossings that access waterfront properties on Lake Washington. At times, police have even issued tickets to cyclists who didn't come to a full stop.
Now that Lake Forest Park has upheld this law in Ordinance 951, the Cascade Bicycle Club is appealing that decision …

It looks like a local newspaper, right along with some area governments, is raising its conciousness level regarding the bicycle-riding public.
Two Seattle Times section fronts in the past week feature bicycling: “Autumn cycling in the Methow Valley” in Northwest Weekend by outdoors writer Michael McQuaide and “Wheeler Dealers” by Paula Bock in the Pacific Northwest Sunday magazine.
McQuaide writes about the miles of scenic, little trafficked roads available rural north central Washington, on the dry side of the Cascades. I remember cycling through there with the Cascade Bicycle Club's Ride Around Washington (RAW) a few years ago and learning that some areas get as little rainfall as Arizona.
On the flip side, Bock reports on cyclists surviving in heavily trafficked Seattle, and the fledgling efforts being made by the city to serve its bicycle-riding population.
Cyclists in Seattle, she writes, have Portland Envy. …

Here we are sliding into fall — for many the end of the bicycling season — and suddenly we're beset with lists of “Best” bicycling cities and trails.
The latest to chime in is the Washington Post, which touts New York City as having the potential to be the best bicycling metropolis in the US, then lists suggestions from Adventure Cycling Association and Bicycling magazine for their top 10 bike friendly cities.
Why New York City? …

A recent issue of Sunset Magazine lists the Burke-Gilman Trail that runs through the Seattle area as one of the Top 10 City Bike Rides in the western United States.
Kudos to the 30-year-old urban bicycle trail. And shame on the City of Lake Forest Park for suggesting an ordinance that, in effect, would make it impractical to improve the narrow section of trail that runs through that city …

Hood Canal Bridge. Dungeness River Bridge. Johnson Creek and Morse Creek trestles.
When I biked over to the Olympic Peninsula a few weeks ago for a bicycle-camping trip, it wasn't my intention to recreate a romantic drama like Clint Eastwood's “Bridges of Madison County.”
There's nothing particularly romantic about a sweaty, dusty bicyclist with yesterday's laundry — chamois-side up — fastened to his bike trailer with bungee cords to dry.
But I did stop to take a few pictures of the bridges I crossed along the way. …

I attached my gear-loaded trailer and front panniers to the bicycle last week and headed down the driveway for the Olympic Peninsula. As you can see from this first-night self-portrait at Chimacum about 10 hours later, it was going to be a good trip.
It had been quite a few years since the last time I loaded up the bike for a self-supported tour, and this trip reminded me about some things I had learned from earlier trips: …

If you're looking for something to do on the last Saturday night (Aug. 26) of the month, roll on down to Seattle's Bike-In at Magnuson Park. We're not talking “Breaking Away” or “Pee-wee's Big Adventure” here
