Rail-trail on Eastside is no done deal

(See the Update below) The Seattle papers are full of controversy about plans to convert the 42-mile BNSF railroad tracks between Renton and Snohomish into a bicycle trail. Is anyone surprised?

The county executive for King County said he wouldn't fund construction of a trail on the right-of-way if the tracks aren't torn up.

Some, like the Cascadia Center at Discovery Institute, say the tracks should be left in place to upgrade the north-south corridor for passenger rail service. The freight line tracks, still in occasional use, run right along highly congested I-405 ….

November ride stats: Back on two wheels

A while back I remember pummeling myself for not hitting my monthly goal of 333 miles to reach this year's target of 4,000 miles. But when my doctor recommended surgery for prostate cancer, I thought my riding days were over for a long time.

Would I have to buy a recumbent? Would I be able to ride at all in 1 month, 2 months, 3 months?

It wasn't as long as I thought it would be; about five weeks. Some guys at the prostate support group were surprised I was back at it that soon. Well, I took it real easy…

Seattle council endorses Bicycle Master Plan

The Seattle City Council unanimously approved the 10-year Bicycle Master Plan on Monday that one local bike activist called the best in the nation.

Mayor Greg Nickels, who just finished hosting the US Conference of Mayors on Climate Change, says he hopes to triple the number of people who ride bicycles in the city.

The plan calls for spending about $240 million over the life of the plan to build a network of bike lanes, bike routes and multi-use trails criss-crossing the city. …

Seattle Bicycle Master Plan goes to vote at Monday meeting

The Seattle city council is set to vote on the 10-year Bicycle Master Plan at Monday's meeting, starting at 2 p.m. at City Hall.

People can comment on the master plan at the start of the council meeting, so this would be a perfect time to show up and directly tell council members what you think of it.

The document calls for adding 135 miles of bicycle lanes or bike routes to the city's 67-mile network over the next three years. Also, the “last mile” of the Burke-Gilman bike trail to Ballard would be completed …

Portland's Little Red Bike Cafe

If you're pedaling through North Portland on your bicycle and feel some hunger pangs, you might want to swing by the “bike-thru” window at the Little Red Bike Cafe.

Only open a couple of months, the breakfast and lunch cafe will feed anyone who wants some homemade goodness in the form of sandwiches, baked goods, ice cream and locally roasted coffees. But cyclists do get that 50-cent drink discount that others don't.

Owners Evan and Ali explain all the trials of opening a restaurant and feature their tasty menu offerings at the Little Red Bike Cafe blog. Don't read it on an empty stomach. …

End of the road for now; September ride stats

My bike touring buddy took this picture as I paused at the top of a climb on our overnight bicycle ride on the Olympic Peninsula over Labor Day weekend. It seems like a year ago.

I was suffering from carrying too much weight on a rollercoaster route through the Kitsap Peninsula, across the Hood Canal Bridge, and then along the shoreline on the lightly traveled but hilly Paradise Bay Road.

It was my highlight ride of the bicycling month, which has come to an early end because of pending surgery….

Cascade Spawning Cycle: Bicycling scenic Seattle as it's rarely seen

There are days, typically in the autumn, when the clouds clear away and we can enjoy the scenic views around Seattle.

I took these photos on a bike ride around Seattle a few weeks ago, and if the current weather holds, many of the same views can be enjoyed by bicyclists on the Cascade Bicycle Club's Spawning Cycle bike ride on Sunday.

At least one of the five bike ride options passes through the Magnolia neighborhood, where I took the above photo of Mt. Rainier across Elliott Bay. ….

Most remote bike ride; August stats

Ordered to stay off the bicycle for 10 days in early August by my doctor, I returned to cycling with an easy ride around a town that bills itself as the most remote in the lower 48 states.

That “most remote” claim can be challenged, I suppose, but it's one that certainly held up on our visit there.

Stehekin (pop. 80) sits at the northern end of Lake Chelan in central Washington state. There are no roads in or out of this town. As a matter of fact, the only way in is to hike over the Cascades or take a boat from the town of Chelan some 50 miles away at the opposite side of the lake…

Bicycle touring from Seattle to Port Townsend

Port Townsend bike trail

With time running out for a summertime bicycle tour, a neighbor and I took an overnight bicycle trip up to Port Townsend on the Olympic Peninsula this Labor Day weekend.

The Olympic Peninsula is a great bicycling destination. Cyclists take a ferry across the Puget Sound to Bainbridge Island. After a few miles on busy roads, they have a choice of busy well-graded roads with shoulders or narrower country roads with a lot of steep ups and downs.

Either way, they enjoy spectacular views of the Olympic Mountains and sweeping vistas of the Puget Sound and its tributaries…

Playing hooky on a bicycle along the Seattle waterfront

Usually I lurk in a Wi-Fi enabled public library and do some freelancing or blogging while my daughter attends summer camp.

Facing a limited number of bicycling days, I took advantage of some rare sunny, dry, mild weather in Seattle and gave myself a bike tour between Green Lake and downtown.

I spotted the nattily dressed gentleman who had parked his bike at a park bench, above, along the Elliott Bay waterfront. His cap kept the sun out of his eyes while he gazed south along the busy harbor to Safeco and Qwest fields and Mount Rainier in the distance. What a perfect place to relax….
