Another missing link in an off-road bicycling route between Seattle and the Cascades has been closed.
The state transportation and parks departments completed a 1.2-mile connector trail between the Issaquah-High Point Trail and the Preston-Snoqualmie Trail in December.
The trail, which cost $4.7 million, eliminates one of the gaps in the Mountains to Sound Greenway that runs from the Seattle waterfront to Central Washington generally along the Interstate 90 corridor.
I rolled up there last month to check it out. It starts across the street …

My annual goal for bicycling since moving here to Washington state 10 years ago has been 4,000 miles. I've achieved that three times. Three for 10 is not a good record, unless we're talking batting averages.
At the end of 2010, when I missed my goal by about 500 miles, I announced I was shooting for 4,000 miles again this year. By making my monthly totals in a public setting, I'm thinking it will inspire me to keep my eyes on the prize.
So in the spirit of public disclosure, I'm proud to announce that I rode 309 miles in January. That's only about 24 miles off the 333 miles I must average monthly to hit 4,000 miles at the end of the year….

Because of the huge demand for Ride from Seattle to Vancouver and Party (RSVP) in recent years, the Cascade Bicycle Club has announced it will host a second identical ride this year — dubbed RSVP2 — that leaves one-day later.
Unlike the grandfather ride, registration for the new RSVP2 will be handled on a lottery basis with winners selected by random.
Registration for the lottery runs from next Wednesday, Feb. 9, to Feb. 23 …..

For all you pickers out there, I spied this old tractor for sale in a field while I was out for a bike ride yesterday.
I've seen this old agricultural beast sitting out here for several years, but never noticed the “For Sale” sign posted on the barbed wire fence. I always thought it was some type of yard art.
I understand this low-mileage cream-puff was used by a little old lady who only drove it on Sundays. The factory-paint was John Deere green, but that was later customized ….

A 3-foot passing bill has been tabled in the Washington state legislature while a vote on one in Virginia is expected this week. Meanwhile, a bill in Oklahoma would impose fines for the existing 3-foot passing law there.
The Washington bill to require motorists to give bicyclists a 3-foot gap when passing (expanded to 5 feet at 35 mph or above) has been tabled at the request of the Bicycle Alliance of Washington because of other controversial aspects of the legislation.
The passing provision was included in HB 1018, entitled the Mutual Responsibilities bill, which was an attempt to define what is required for motor vehicles and bicycles to safely share the road …

Lance Armstrong has the Livestrong Challenge, Levi Leipheimer has the King Ridge Gran Fondo in Santa Rosa, and now Chris Horner is rolling out the Cascade Gran Fondo bicycle ride near his hometown of Bend, Oregon.
The 39-year-old RadioShack cyclist is known as much for his humor as his pro cycling career that stretches back to 1996.
Now he's hosting a weekend fund-raiser event that's scheduled for Aug. 18-20, 2011. It features an “Evening of Stories” the first night, a VIP dinner the second, and a 75-mile Gran Fondo-style bicycle ride through the Cascades on the third day ….

Here's a bike messenger, right down to his freshly skinned forearm, asserting his rights on the streets of Portland in the new comedy series “Portlandia.”
The six-episode series premieres at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT Friday on cable network IFC.
The show is the creation of Fred Armisen of Saturday Night Live and singer-musician Carrie Brownstein, who set about to poke a little fun at the city and its inhabitants. They both say they love Portland, but can find it to be a little quirky ….

Advocates at the Cascade Bicycle Club are preparing testimony to support a recrafted “vulnerable users bill” that's scheduled for a hearing in Olympia on Friday.
It's just one of five bills in the Washington state legislature this season that directly relate to making the roads safer for bicyclists, among others. The Cascade Bicycle Club and the Bicycle Alliance of Washington are involved in the lobbying efforts on these in the House and Senate.
The Vulnerable Users Bill, which failed to pass last year, is returning as SB 5326, submitted by Senator Adam Kline, D-Seattle. It calls for special penalties in cases where a motorist causes the death or serious injury of a pedestrian or bicyclist because of negligent driving. …

A Kitsap County, Washington, judge has revoked the community service of a motorist who struck and killed a bicyclist in 2009 and re-sentenced her to jail time, which she'll most likely serve in home confinement.
In a case that angered bicycle rights advocates, the motorist was charged and sentenced only for driving with a suspended license. Prosecutors say their hands are tied in cases where intoxication, recklessness, or gross negligence is not a factor.
A vulnerable user bill that stalled in the Washington state legislature last year would have created penalties in cases where negligent driving causes injury or death of a pedestrian or bicyclist. That bill is the Cascade Bicycle Club's top priority in 2011. A hearing is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, in Olympia …

In an open letter to the Cascade Bicycle Club's membership, seven members of the Board of Directors said they will offer their resignations after a newly elected board is in place.
The letter, posted to the Cascade blog on Friday afternoon, also urges members to help find qualified leaders within the club to run for the newly expanded Board of Directors in the upcoming election in March.
The board also said it has postponed any changes to the club's bylaws or the search for a new executive director until after the new directors are seated ….
