Maybe I'm a little too engrossed by the mountain stages of the Giro d'Italia, but these switchbacks on the Preston-Snoqualmie Trail caught my eye on a bicycle ride Tuesday.
These turns are sharp and the pitch of the gravel trail is steep. I had no problem obeying a sign that said bicyclists should dismount.
The switchbacks interrupt the rail-trail where it dips off the plateau to cross the Preston-Fall City Road and the Raging River …

Of course you know why you're seeing more than the usual number of bicyclists on the street today.
This is the start of Bike to Work Week and everyone is out there doing their part to fight traffic congestion, reduce air pollution and improve their physical well-being.
Here in the Seattle area, they might be among the 7,867 bicycle commuters who are logging their miles on 1,307 teams in hopes of winning some prizes as part of the 2011 Group Health Commute Challenge.
It's not too late to get started, as the highlight of the week is Bike to Work Day on Friday….

One of many cyclists who rolled into Gas Works Park in Seattle on Saturday enjoys listening to Orkestar Zirkonium.
The local Balkan band was one of more than a dozen from across the western US and Canada participating in the fourth Honk Fest West to serenade Seattle this weekend.
The bands will perform one last time throughout the Seattle Center Grounds beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday ….

David Hiller, the advocacy director for the Cascade Bicycle Club in Seattle, has announced his resignation effective on Friday.

Renton is hosting a “Share the Trail” event on the Cedar River Trail on Saturday to circulate information about the rules and trail etiquette that went into effect last summer.
In a nutshell, the city lowered the speed limit for bicycles to 10 mph and set a $101 fine for violations. It also painted a yellow line down the center of the trail and asks users to stay to the right of the line unless passing.
The parks department wants to make this Saturday event fun, so there will be booths with prizes and refreshments for all who attend from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ron Regis Park, Renton ….

If you're looking for a fresh bicycle trail to ride this weekend, you might want to head over to the just-completed South Lake Connector trail in Renton.
At less than a mile long, the multi-use trail fills the missing link on the Lake Washington bike route and connects the Cedar River Trail to a network of bicycling trails and bike lanes in King County.
I discovered the trail was open as I poked around on my bicycle in Renton on Friday. Although crews are still working on landscaping and no signs have been installed …

Update: May 5, 2011 — If you haven't signed up yet for the Seattle to Portland (STP) Bicycle Classic, it's too late. Almost.
The Cascade Bicycle Club reported that the ride sold out as of March 22. That's the earliest ever that the 10,000 openings have disappeared.
There are a couple of ways, however, to score registrations as the July 9-10 event draws near.
Auction and refunds

A bill that encourages cities to embrace “Complete Streets” policies is slated to be signed into law on Thursday by Washington state Gov. Christine Gregoire.
House Bill 1071 calls on the Department of Transportation to issue grants to local jurisdictions that use design standards on arterial street retrofits that provide safe access to bicyclists and pedestrians.

Maybe I shouldn't go out on a limb here, but sources tell me that meteorological and cosmic forces are coming together for a good weekend for bicycling in the Pacific Northwest.
In other words, temperatures in the 50s and 60s with no precipitation.
You can certainly head out on your own, or you can visit some organized bike rides this weekend. I checked out the April and May bike ride calendars to see what's happening and found three coming up this weekend and more in the future.
Unfortunately, procrastinators will learn that registration for Tour de Lopez 2011 on Saturday has closed ….

Do you remember when Bike to Work Day was the big focus to encourage people to commute on their bicycles for just one day a year?
Those Bike to Work Days still exist, but now they're the core for Bike to Work Week events and an entire Bike Month celebration — which is coming up in May.
Many commuters are forming teams in their cities — such as those in the Seattle area [Washington state details below] — to compete for bike commuting prizes in May. If interested, you'll want to sign up before May 1 to log as many miles for the month that you can. ….
