Pacific Northwest mountain biking featured in video

A Colorado-based mountain biking videographer and his freestyle biking friend rolled out our way recently to document some of our amazing places to ride. They found more than they expected.

One of the locations featured is the Duthie Hill Park, which opened last year up in the Issaquah Highlands.

The skills park is a great example of a government agency (King County Parks) working with local enthusiasts (Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance) …

Share your ideas about King County's trails and parks

If you ride the dirt and paved trails operated by King County (WA) Parks, you might want to participate in an online survey.

It takes about 10 minutes to fill out.

The park folks want to know how we use their facilities, what we like and don't like about them, and how we think they can be improved.

It can't …

Enjoying the bike ride across Lake Washington

Sometimes I take for granted some of the great bicycling assets right in my own back yard.

One of those is the bike lane across the Interstate 90 Lake Washington bridge that links Seattle with the Eastside suburbs.

The proper name is the Homer M. Hadley Memorial Bridge, and the bike lane has been part of the bridge since it opened in 1989.

I discovered this bike lane on the westbound floating bridge soon after moving here 11 years ago. I use it on my occasional bike rides into Seattle or down to the ferry terminals for rides on the Olympic Peninsula.

Hundreds of bike commuters use it daily ….

The joy of bicycling Washington's Palouse region

Crossing mountain passes by bicycle always gives me a lot of satisfaction, but I get the most thrill from bicycling on rolling rural roads.

I enjoy using my big gear to power downhill and gain enough momentum to help me up the next rise. At the top a view of the landscape unfolds in front of me before I dive into the next tight valley.

Some of the best rolling terrain I've ever ridden is in the Palouse region of southeastern Washington, above.

This is a wheat and legume-growing area encompassing hundreds of square miles of silt dunes created during the last Ice Age. Farm roads wind around these humps and hallows …

Busy cycling weekend in western Washington

It's only Friday morning, and the first big bicycle ride of the weekend is underway.

The 30th anniversary RSVP (Ride from Seattle to Vancouver and Party) left the University of Washington parking lot Friday morning for an overnight in Bellingham, before completing the bike trip in Vancouver on Saturday.

For the first time, an overflow ride — RSVP 2 — will take the same route, leaving and arriving a day later.

While it's too late to sign up for that popular ride [you'll need to check the Cascade Bicycle Club website right after New Year's], the relatively newer Ride the Hurricane is still taking registrations for Sunday.

Hurricane Ridge is described by Pez Cycling as one of the “crown jewels” of cycling in the Pacific Northwest ….

An overnight bike trip to the Snoqualmie Tunnel finds a popular destination

On an overnight bike trip to the John Wayne Pioneer Trail last weekend, my biking buddy and I discovered that the newly reopened Snoqualmie Tunnel is drawing a lot of visitors.

Mostly they're day-trippers on bicycles, but some come by foot and at least a couple packed in with their llamas carrying their burdens.

The cyclists we talked with were taking advantage of the 18-mile downhill slope that greets them after they pass through the tunnel heading west.

They either came in groups and dropped off cars in Hyak and the Iron Horse Trail State Park lot in Cedar Falls, or contacted the shuttle service that carries passengers and bicycles to the Hyak trailhead …

Overnighter bicycle tour to the Key Peninsula from Seattle

The ferries that cross Puget Sound can be a quick and affordable escape for bicyclists seeking to get away from the urban sprawl for a rural retreat.

Although these ferry rides are relatively short, I always feel that I've been deposited on a faraway shore with all my cares and worries left behind.

Last week, I rode down to the Seattle Ferry Terminal to begin an overnight bicycle tour to the Key Peninsula, a rather isolated part of lower Kitsap. How isolated? A barista I spoke with near the town of Home said she'd lived there 32 years and was still considered a newcomer.

I would only be gone 30 hours, but I felt like I'd been away from home for a week by the time I returned …

Advocacy bike ride through Bellevue's Factoria and Eastgate centers

The city of Bellevue is hooking up with local bike and hike advocacy groups for a bicycle ride on Tuesday to shed light onto how to make the city's busiest bicycle corridor more bike-friendly.

The city is studying future land use and transportation changes in the so-called Eastgate Corridor that runs roughly east-west between Factoria Boulevard and Lakemont Boulevard interchange.

Participants can learn more about the city's plans for the Mountains to Sound Greenway Corridor and provide input on how to make it safer in light of ongoing commercial and employment growth in the area. The upcoming bike ride….

An as-yet unidentified bicyclist was struck from behind and killed by an 18-year-old driving a pickup truck in Kirkland on Friday afternoon.
