30 days of biking: A nasty and wet ride

As much as I love bicycling, there was nothing much inspiring or exhilarating about Day 3 of 30 Days of Biking.

Monday’s glorious sunshine was long gone and the seasonal blustery rainy weather returned.

I took the opportunity to return a Blockbuster video and stop at the store on the way home.

Before the video chain downsized, that would have meant a 4-mile bike ride. But a couple of years ago Blockbuster closed its nearby store so it gives me an opportunity for a 10-mile round-trip …

Grand Ridge: New trail for mountain bikers and hikers completed

After volunteers put in more than 40,000 hours of labor over the past 10 years, the completion of a new 7-mile trail in the Issaquah Highlands (WA) will be celebrated with a public hike and barbecue on Thursday.

The Grand Ridge Trail is open to mountain bikers, hikers and equestrians. The trail includes a 40-foot-long log bridge, two shorter log bridges and the just-completed 600-foot-long elevated boardwalk that passes over a hemlock bog.

The Washington Trail Association held 448 volunteer events …

30 days of biking: May Valley Road

Day 2 of “30 Days of Biking” sent me out May Valley Road to Squak State Park and back.

This is my default 20-mile bike route here in Washington. It hugs the south-facing base of Cougar and Squak mountains so if there’s any sun, it gets some warmth.

More than that, it’s a two-lane road …

Making an attempt for 30 days of biking in April

Originally I dismissed the idea of 30 Days of Biking, launched in 2010 and posted to Twitter by two Minneapolis cyclists as #30daysofbiking.

It is returning in 2012, and already I can see several dates looming in April when I just don’t know how I’ll get out on my bike to ride.

I have good reasons to skip those days. But other people have what they call “good reasons” to skip a day, or a week, or a month or to never use a bike to ride to work, run an errand, or just get some exercise.

Maybe my reasons are just as lame. So I’m going to give it a go and see how many days I can ride this month. Maybe I’ll do all 30, which would be great. Maybe I’ll only hit 25 …

Images of future Hwy. 520 bike trail over Lake Washington

It seems almost too good to be true for Seattle area bicyclists. The new Highway 520 bridge across Lake Washington will have bicycle and pedestrians lanes. These artists’ renderings prove it.

The Washington Department of Transportation posted the future views of the bridge at its flickr.com account last week.

Although I knew that advocates from Cascade Bicycle Club and the Bicycle Alliance of Washington pushed for a bike trail on the new bridge, seeing these views somehow makes it all the more real.

Now all we have to do is wait …

Dates announced for Bicycle Sunday 2012

Bicycle Sunday, Seattle’s version of ciclovia, returns again for 12 Sundays this summer from May through September.

The 2 1/2-mile course on Lake Washington Boulevard between Seward Park and Mount Baker Beach will be closed to motor vehicle traffic from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on those days.

That makes the shoreline stretch a magnet for everyone from families on bikes to road cyclists completing a loop around Lake Washington.

The number of dates offered — 12 — are fewer …

Write WSDOT: Hood Canal bridge still needs work for safe bicycling

Washington state bicycling advocates are facing a March 30 (Friday) deadline to convince the state to make some safety improvements to the Hood Canal Bridge (left).

The Bicycle Alliance of Washington (BAW) is asking cyclists to contact state Department of Transportation officials to get moving on the project.

Although replaced in 2009, the bridge that links the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas still needs an estimated $1.8 million in work to make it safer for bicycles.

Problems include uneven surfaces between bridge sections, slick metal plates, raised rivets on the plates that narrow riding surface and gaps that have trapped narrow bike tires, causing falls. …

Celebrate reopening of Burke Gilman Trail on Tuesday

The official grand reopening of the Burke Gilman Trail through Lake Forest Park will be celebrated on Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a bike ride.

A 2-mile section of the trail was closed between Log Boom Park and 145th Street for about 8 months. It reopened to positive reviews in mid-February.

Work crews contracted by King County widened the trail to 12 feet, improved sight lines, repaved the cracked surface and replaced a series of stop signs with yield signs.

The official reopening is scheduled for 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday …

New Puget Sound bike ride launches in 2012

Bicyclists who want to say they’ve pedaled around the Puget Sound will have a new opportunity this year.

The American Lung Association is launching the Ride Around the Sound on Sept. 15 as a one-day charity bike ride that ends in West Seattle.

The new bike ride is not to be confused with the long-time popular RAPSody (Ride Around Puget Sound), a two-day ride that benefits the Bicycle Alliance of Washington. That’s scheduled for Aug. 25 and 26 this year.

The Lung Association’s Ride Around the Sound pledge bike ride replaces the long-running three-day Trek Tri Island bike tour …
