Can you identify these historic club logos from 19th Century Washington?

Here’s a wonderful vintage bicycling photo from Washington dating from the late 1800s that found its way to me. Can anyone identify the “T” and “CCC” symbols emblazoned on some of the jerseys worn in this photo? [See the full photo inside]

The photo’s owner is a descendant of the woman on right side of the photo.

That woman is the owner’s great grandmother, Daisy Hackshaw. He says the photo was taken in the late 1800s near Olympia. Washington wasn’t granted statehood until 1889, so he figures …

The bicycling public has a chance to talk directly with the city staff in charge of updating Seattle’s Bicycle Master Plan at three public meetings this week.

The goal of the master plan, first approved in 2007, is to make bicycling a safe and integral part of getting around Seattle.

Header photos described at Biking Bis

When I redesigned my Biking Bis blog for WordPress last spring, I activated a feature that rotates through several images for the header whenever someone accesses a page.

Recently, a reader asked me where those photos were taken because she’d like to ride in those places. That’s a great idea.

Photos can be motivating to someone …

Cedar River bike trail is open from Renton to Landsburg

A short section of the Cedar River Trail that had been closed to bicycles while crews shored up a riverbank has been reopened.

Even though plenty of “Trail Closed” signs are still posted along the route, the trail is open.

Work crews had closed the half-mile section between 16916 Renton-Maple Valley Rd. S.E., to the …

Bicycling with the return of weather and fall foliage forecasts

Gosh. I just love the sound my bicycle tires make as they zip through puddles and slosh over soggy leaves that fall on wet autumn days. That’s why it was so much fun to ride through the first decent rain of the season on Sunday.

OK. That’s a bunch of malarkey.

I never enjoyed bicycling …

Sun shines on colorful Kitsap Color Classic bicycle ride

As fall rolls along, I feel an obligation to go out for a bicycle ride on every sunny day because I’m afraid it might be the last time I’ll see my shadow until next summer.

I wasn’t disappointed on Sunday as I joined more than a thousand other Seattle-area cyclists for a ferry ride to Kingston for the 19th annual Kitsap Color Classic presented by Cascade Bicycle Club.
This is the club’s last big ride of the year, and on Sunday the scene at the ferry dock in Edmonds resembled the club’s first ride of the year — the Chilly Hilly. The only difference was that the sun shone brilliantly …

Final Bicycle Sunday for 2012 in Seattle; Burning Man trike

The string of a dozen Bicycle Sundays in 2012 ended on a glorious sunny fall day in Seattle.

A steady stream of bicyclists — everyone from the hard-core cyclists to biking tots with their families — showed up on Lake Washington Boulevard on Sunday to ride without having to worry about cars. That’s because motor vehicles were banned for the day between Seward Park and Mount Baker Beach.

What really struck me, however, was the appearance of the MOOP Jet, a fanciful trike that might seem more at home at Burning Man, where it has made a couple of landings.

The hand-crafted vehicle is the creation of Clair Colquitt …
