Olympic Peninsula – Paving the Spruce Railroad Trail on the “back side” of Lake Crescent creates safer bike route

A paved trail is slowly but surely replacing the dirt and rock Spruce Railroad Trail on the north shore of Lake Crescent. When complete, it will provide a safe and scenic alternative to the narrow shoulder of US Highway 101 that bicyclists must now use to pass the lake.

Anyone who has bicycled on US Highway 101 …

Death of Seattle bicyclist brings sadness, raises questions

There’s much heartache in the Seattle bicycling community today after the death on Friday of Sher Kung, a young mother who was killed at a downtown intersection on Second Avenue at University Street.

Let me add my condolences to the family, friends and coworkers of the attorney. An impromptu memorial, including a ghost bike and flowers, has …

Slowly but surely, the Centennial Trail through Spokane is closing its gaps as it celebrates its 25-year anniversary.

Built along off-road paths and on-road shoulders between 1989 and 1991, the trail rolls for more than 37 miles along the Spokane River between the Idaho border, through the old world’s fair site downtown, and out to the rocky …

Cycle track opens to connect rail-trails in eastern King County

King County has completed installing a cycle track to connect the gap between two eastside Seattle rail-trails — the Issaquah-Preston Trail and Preston-Snoqualmie Trail.

The cycle track, which is the first I can recall in unincorporated King County, runs for 0.7 mile along south side of SE High Point  Way. It’s a two directional cycle …

Making streets safer for bicyclists is headline news in Seattle

“Seattle has banned drivers from turning right at one of the city’s busiest intersections, to protect the thousands of bicyclists passing through.” — Seattle Times

That temporary right-turn ban during road construction at the busy Mercer Street-Dexter Avenue intersection warranted front page play above the fold in this morning’s Seattle Times.

Making a road safer for …

How to tell Oregon what you think of Scenic Bikeways

The folks at the Oregon tourism department came up with a great idea a few years ago when they developed the first of 12 Oregon Scenic Bikeways.

It’s the first, and still the only, such program in the US. The routes are created with the help of local riders and range from a morning’s ride …

Bike commuters beat the back-up on I-90

Scores of bicyclists took to the Mountains-to-Sound/I-90 bike trail this morning to avoid being stuck in traffic at the Interstate 90 work zone in Bellevue.

Although no one was making a count of bike commuters, I’d estimate that bike traffic passing the kiosk at the base of the Eastern Connector bridge was equal to or greater than the …
