The North American Handmade Bicycle Show returns to the West Coast this weekend for all those devoted to the elegance and durability of bicycles made in small shops.
The exhibition will be open from 11-6 Friday, 10-6 Saturday and 10-5 Sunday at the Sacramento Convention Center at 1400 J Street.
A bike ride and a bike art event in town are tied to the show.

The 9 endurance cyclists who set off a little more than a week ago (Feb. 18) for an around the world bicycle race from London are already spread across three continents.
Most of the cyclists in the World Cycle Racing Grand Tour are heading eastward on various routes across Europe, while two others are heading the opposite direction in North and South America.
While its tough to determine the leader because they'll all taking different routes, Mike Hall has racked up the most miles as of Monday — 1,493.
Rules set up by the Guinness Book of World Records, the winner will be the first to cross the finish line in London …

The struggle to pass a law in California that requires motorists to give bicycles 3 feet of space when passing won't die.
A state senator from Long Beach on Friday submitted SB 1464 to the state legislature. It makes it illegal for the driver of a motor vehicle to overtake a bicycle traveling in the same direction “at a distance of less than three feet… “
So far, 20 states nationwide require that motorists give bicyclists at least a 3-foot margin when passing.
This is the third 3-foot passing bill introduced in the California …

When the Hollywood glitterati take their walk down the Red Carpet at the Academy Awards on Sunday, imagine that they've arrived by bicycle.
It's doubtful they did. I think the limousine is still the transport of choice to such events.

This stolen bicycle case from Chico, California, is notable even though more than a quarter million bicycles are stolen every year.
Police have arrested a man they believe is responsible for the theft of an estimated $125,000 worth of high-end bicycles in northern California.
They found 30 such bicycles whole or disassembled for resale in a storage locker.
The Chico Press-Enterprise says that police believe the 28-year-old man already sold more than a dozen stolen bicycles …

The leadership of three bicycle advocacy groups announced Wednesday that they're recommending a unification plan “to more effectively support and advance bicycling in the United States.”
The three are the League of American Bicyclists, Alliance for Biking & Walking and Bikes Belong.
A final decision is expected by September. If the boards of directors of all three organizations ratify the plan, the new organization (no name has been proposed) would launch in 2013 …

If weather forecasters are accurate, Sunday's 40th annual Chilly Hilly bike ride should hold true to its name.
The Sunday forecast for the Bainbridge Island perimeter bike ride is “mostly cloudy and chilly” with a possibility of showers and a high of 44; wind out of the west at 8 mph.
That's the kind of weather that cyclists expect for Chilly Hilly, along with the 2,675 feet of elevation gain over the rolling 33 miles course. The photo at left is from 2007, a cold wet day.
Of course, cyclists didn't complain …

Fuji is recalling 10,500 women's Saratoga bicycles after receiving reports that the downtube can break, causing falls and injuries.
The company and US Consumer Product Safety Commission urges owners to stop riding the cruiser-style bicycles and return them to Fuji dealers for a replacement frame.
The company, through Philadelphia-based importer Advanced Sports, says at least 12 bike frames have broken. The failures caused two injuries, including one head injury that required 20 stitches to close ….
