The father of LSD says he was riding his bicycle the first time he felt the hallucinogenic effects of acid.
Could Albert Hofmann, who died at age 102 in 2008, have been the first cyclist to be accused of doping? You could certainly say took the first bike trip.
Hofmann told the International Herald Tribune …

It looks like Pittsburgh’s last leg of the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) will open soon, finally completing a 335-mile off-road bicycle route from Washington DC to Pittsburgh. [See the interactive map below.]
Crews are working on the “final mile” to link the Steel Valley Trail to the Three Rivers Heritage Trail that will deposit GAP …

Work has finally begun in Arlington on the last 1-mile interruption of the Centennial Trail as it rolls for some 30 miles from downtown Snohomish to the Skagit County line.
The construction on 67th Avenue Northeast should run off and on throughout the year and into early 2014. Crews started installing fencing and opening parts …

An annual rite of spring is the reopening of the North Cascades Highway in April or early May after snow plow crews complete the task of scraping the road to bare pavement.
That not only opens a 40-mile stretch of Highway 20 in northern Washington state to car traffic, but it also marks the reopening of a remarkably scenic link of Adventure Cycling Association’s Northern Tier and Washington State Parks bicycle routes to touring bicyclists.
The Washington State Department of Transportation is shooting for a 1 p.m. Tuesday reopening of the highway, unless this past weekend’s spring snows …

After being impressed with the winning images in the Adventure Cycling Association’s bike touring photography contests in recent years, I was really looking forward to the results of its Bike Travel Video Contest.
The winning videos announced recently in each of three categories did not disappoint. Each one is entertaining, brief, and should leave viewers with one common thought — traveling by bicycle is fun.
In my opinion, the succinctly named “Northern Europe by Bike” is the best of the best. The film by Stefan Böhm of Germany …

It may not always look like it, but the Seattle area has had below average rainfall so far this year.
One result is today’s early reopening of mountain biking trails at Tiger Mountain State Forest.
When I was out there last month to ride out to Poo Poo Point on forest roads, the trails were …

While the Foothills Trail in Pierce County has its daffodils, the Centennial Trail in Snohomish County could be known for its most predominant spring flower — the skunk cabbage.
On Saturday’s Opening Day for Trails, I joined a host of cyclists out for a sunny bike ride along the Centennial Trail. This wonderful rail-trail now …

Saturday is Opening Day for Trails, a good time to go out and celebrate the arrival of spring with a bicycle ride on a local trail.
I’ve never heard of Opening Day for Trails until the Rails to Trails Conservancy sent me a reminder about a free T-shirt offer for telling them about my favorite trail.
The event is obviously ceremonial — like the first pitch at a baseball game — because there is no end to the trail season. Most are open year-round.
Here in my neck of the Pacific Northwest, the rail-trails …

Growing up in Ohio and spending lots of time bicycling country roads, I’ve certainly seen my share of barns. Red barns. White barns. Weathered wooden barns. Barns with Mail Pouch Tobacco signs on them.
But I’ve never seen a blue barn.
Bicyclists who ride the roads of the Snoqualmie Valley undoubtedly know this location. The King County Historic and Scenic Corridors Project tells us …
