Capturing evidence of Seahawks support by bike

Less than 48 hours after the Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl, I came across plenty of evidence of how much the “12th-Man” fan base supports its team.

I passed the Seahawks training facility in Renton while riding on the Lake Washington bicycle route this afternoon and could see where fans gathered to welcome home …

Bicycling dirt and gravel roads gaining popularity

Most bicyclists traditionally avoid gravel roads and paths like the plague. It can make for sketchy, tipsy riding, and the friction makes for slow going.

But as the alternative sometimes is riding a bike on busy or narrow highways, many more are discovering the new-found pleasures of a crunchy ride. Many turn to mountain bikes …

Vintage Washington map shows today’s rails-to-trail network

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a sucker for maps, especially older ones. Sometimes I think that’s one reason I like to explore by bicycle — it gives me a chance to follow those blue lines on a map at a snail’s pace.

So you can imagine my reaction when the Mountains to …

Before Pete Seeger had a hammer, he had a bicycle

Singer-songwriter-political activist Pete Seeger, known for penning such songs as “If I Had a Hammer,” died on Monday at age 94.

While I’ve enjoyed the message in his music over the years, what struck me this morning was the line in many obits that Seeger “dropped out of Harvard University in 1938 to ride a bicycle across …

150 years of bicycle history at CNN

Bicycle historian David V. Herlihy was called upon to provide background for CNN’s Art of Movement feature this month that focuses on the bicycle — “the world’s most popular vehicle.”

Scottsdale pays big settlement for deteriorated bike path

The old adage “You can’t fight city hall” doesn’t apply to a Scottsdale, Arizona, man who crashed on a notoriously poorly maintained stretch of bike path in that city in 2009.

Allan Fenyves and his attorney fought city hall and won a $426,000 settlement last week in a negligence lawsuit.

KPHO News reports that Scottsdale …

Touring bicyclists can pump up small-town Montana economies

Those travelers who crisscross Montana by bicycle leave a lot of money behind as they go, spending on average between $75 to $102 a day.

That according to “Analysis of Touring Cyclists,” a study by the Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research at University of Montana in cooperation with the nonprofit Adventure Cycling Association, based …
