Cycling oversight group to look at doping allegations

(Updated)I'm not so sure there's much use in the Union Cycliste Internationale investigating the EPO doping claims issued by L'Equipe last week.

Without naming Lance Armstrong specifically, the UCI said Monday that it's “pursuing its global assessment of the situation.”

I suppose it's comforting that cycling's governing body will study the claims, but what kind of results can it reach? The …

Ale-Jet lands a stage win in Vuelta bike race

It took three stages, but cyclist Alessandro Petacchi has made his presence felt at the Vuelta a Espana.

With less than 3 miles to go in the 95-mile bicycle race from Cordoba to Puertollano, Petacchi's Fassa Bortolo teammates led out the sprinter to the finish line, according to the results at CyclingNews.

Sprinters Erik Zabel (T-Mobile), Tom Boonen (Quick Step) and …

Australian McGee takes lead in Vuelta bicycle race

Francaise des Jeux cyclist Brad McGee lost the 2nd stage of the Vuelta a Espana on Sunday but took the gold leader's jersey.

The Australian cyclist finished just behind stage winner Leonardo Bertagnolli (Italy, Cofidis) in the hot, mostly downhill 117-mile bicycle race route from Granada to Cordoba.

McGee and Bertagnolli closed together toward the finish in Cordoba, but McGee chose …

How to follow the Vuelta a Espana bicycle race

The last of the Grand Tour bicycle races begins Saturday, but don't bother to tune in to the Outdoor Life Network to watch it.
Those good feelings from the run-up to the Tour de France with Cyclysm Sundays and cradle to grave coverage of the Tour itself are gone. There's no more Lance Armstrong racing on his bike, and there's no more cycling on OLN.
There are still ways to watch the Vuelta a Espana, however …

Armstrong goes on offensive

Lance Armstrong has retired from professional bicycling, but he can still go on the attack.

Just like he was unwilling to sit back quietly in the peloton, the 7-time Tour de France champion has gone on the offensive to counter allegations that a blood-doping substance was found in his urine from samples taken in 1999.
“There's a setup and …

Just to get it on the record, Levi Leipheimer of Santa Rosa, California, won the Tour of Germany on Tuesday.
Leipheimer took the lead in last week's climb up the Rettenbachferner in Austria and held off Germany's Jan Ullrich through the rest of the race, including Monday's individual time trial. Ullrich finished in second, 31 seconds behind. …

Summer reruns – French accuse Armstrong of doping

They say where there's smoke there's fire. But sometimes the smoke isn't smoke at all, but fumes. And fumes can come from a completely different source.

So we should probably consider the source of these latest doping allegations against Lance Armstrong.

L'Equipe, the French sporting newspaper, is at it again. In Tuesday's editions, L'Equipe alleges Armstrong took the performance-enhancing drug EPO …

Leipheimer survives time trial; retains lead in Tour of Germany

Jan Ullrich won the 18.6-mile individual time trial in the Tour of Germany bicycle race on Monday, but he couldn't make up the 1-minute and 26-second margin of US cyclist Levi Leipheimer to take the overall lead.

With one day left in the 9 stage tour, Leipheimer has a 31-second edge on Ullrich, who now sits in second overall. …

Look who showed up as the winner of the grueling Mt. Washington bicycle climb in New Hampshire on Saturday — Tyler Hamilton.

The 34-year-old racer is appealing a two-year suspension from professional cycling for blood doping. His case goes to the UCI on Sept. 6 for a hearing, according to the Tour de France 2005 blog.  He was able to compete in the Mt. …
