An outdoor trip and adventure planning website has named the Top Trails for 2005. The list of 100 includes five bike routes, although the American River Bike Path (left) in California is mentioned twice — once for mountain bikes and once for road bikes.
The company, Trails.com, calls the list the closest thing to a Nielsen's rating system for trail popularity in the …

What's a bike path cost these days? The so-called Broida Expressway at UC-Santa Barbara cost $583 per foot.
The 900-foot, 12-foot-wide, bicycle path was completed at a cost of $525,000 recently to link the east and west sides of the campus, according to the UC Santa Barbara student newspaper, the Daily Nexus.
The cost was covered by a $3 per student …

It's no shock that people feel very strongly about Lance Armstrong — as an elite cyclist, a cancer survivor, a motivator, a celebrity, a father, a Texan.
News of his breakup with fiance Sheryl Crow brought out a flood of reaction from columnists and bloggers. Here are a few quotes from the weekend that I found particularly mean, weird or funny:
“Lance Armstrong has unsurprisingly split from the jaundiced star girlfriend. It was sad, originally, that he would choose

A state court judge sentenced the wife of a Utah ski resort owner to six months home confinement with an ankle monitor and probation in the 2004 death of cyclist Josie Johnson, left, as she rode at the edge of a winding canyon road.
A jury in December convicted Elizabeth DeSeelhorst, 67, of negligent homicide in the death of Johnson, 25, a graduate …

So there was something to all that talk about the Tour de France champion and the Grammy Award winner splitting up. Lance Armstrong and Sheryl Crow made it official Friday night with a simple statement:
“After much thought and consideration we have made a very tough decision to split up. We both have a deep love and respect for each other …

Unless you live on the West Coast, you bike racing fans might want to brush up on your VCR skills to videotape stages of the upcoming Amgen Tour of California from Feb. 19-26.
The Tour has been touting its prime time coverage on ESPN2. But checking the online EPSN2 TV schedule, I see that must be “prime time” on the West Coast. …

A who's who of top US pro cyclists will compete in this month's Amgen Tour of California bike race. While race organizers emailed out a list of six “elite Americans” who might be a factor in race, it by no means covered all the high-profile racers who are expected to compete.
Leading that list of top US riders bicycling in the February event is George Hincapie (Discovery Channel). Lance Armstrong's long-time teammate on Postal and Discovery, Hincapie (left) achieved a stage win at last year's Tour de France.
But Discovery is also sending American Tom Danielson …

I've often been accused of being a bicycling Luddite. I'm the last cyclist on my block to use integrated brake-handle shifters, aerodynamic helmet, Kevlar tires (what's wrong with Mr. Tuffies?), aero rims, etc.
That also goes for bike electronics. Yet I read with interest a New York Times piece touting a bicycle computer made by Garmin in today's technology section. With 8 data fields, it's too distracting for me to use, although I'm sure many others will find the features very valuable. …

It takes lots of imagination and artistic flair to find new uses for old bicycle parts. Graham Bergh at Resource Revival and his staff must have a limitless supply of both.
They certainly have a limitless supply of parts from which to choose.
The Mosier, Oregon, outfit acquires boxes of used bike parts from shops and bike centers and churns out clocks …

Chicago remembers world renown cyclist Major Taylor in a rail-to-trails bike route that is scheduled to open a new segment this summer.
The Major Taylor Bike Trail is named for Marshall W. Taylor, an African-American cyclist who set speed records in the late 1890s while battling prejudice across the US.
Taylor had become an inspiration to many not only for his cycling …
