It's now less than two weeks until the 2007 Amgen Tour of California begins, and I keep seeing names of major league cyclists who plan to compete in the 8-stage bicycle race.
The latest are Michael Rasmussen of Denmark and Freddie Rodriguez of the US. Add them to a list that already includes Italian Ivan Basso; Americans Levi Leipheimer, George Hincapie, Tom Danielson (all Discovery), David Zabriskie, Christian Vande Velde, and Bobby Julich (all CSC); CSC's Juan Jose Haedo (winner of two stages last year); and world champion Paolo Bettini (QuickStep).
Rasmussen of the Rabobank cycling team is the guy wearing the polka-dot King of the Mountain jersey ….

At the beginning of the year I made the bold prediction that I would sweep aside 2006's dismal bicycling mileage and double my output to 4,000 miles.
Not much for the 8,000-plus mileage crowd, but good enough for a cyclist who has only hit 4,000 miles (the last time in 2003) a few times since completing a cross-country bike tour in 1984.
Doing the math, I'd have to click off an average 333.33 miles per month to hit the mark. That must be more difficult than it sounds, as I only bicycled 206.5 miles in January. Looking back at the bicycling logs I've saved since 1991 …

When RAGBRAI announced its 2007 bike ride across Iowa, organizers said it would be the flattest one ever. The 2007 Denver Post Ride the Rockies can make no such claim.
The 422-mile bike route, which was unveiled Sunday, involves bicycling over four Colorado mountain passes with a total 24,000 feet of elevation gain.
The bicycle tour — June 17-23 — starts and ends in Frisco, with overnights stops in Steamboat Springs, Craig, Rifle, Glenwood Springs, Aspen, and Leadville. Bicyclists climb Rabbit Ears Pass the first day …

The WYMPS are the Waban Young Men's Pedaling Society. And while the Waban, Massachusetts-based club members do pedal, I have doubts about them being young.
The WYMPS have been bicycling cross-country for 11 years. They're not slow, they just tackle it one week at a time. They've covered the route West-to-East, and this summer they'll be in the midst of heading East-to-West.
Here's why Randy Carpenter contacted me for help. The group is looking to rent two rental vans to carry gear and store bikes for the 12 riders. Vans from a touring or outdoor outfit would be ideal. They're willing to pay, they just haven't found a tour outfit with vans to spare, yet. They need the vans from June 22-29, 2007 …

Bicycling has had fatal consequences for a North Carolina family.
Three members of the Hedrick family have died while riding their bicycles. Now a fourth is hospitalized after being struck by a hit and run driver in the Salisbury area, about halfway between Charlotte and Greensboro.
Tommy Hedrick, 58, is in fair condition in the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after being struck by a light-colored, four-door Malibu or other GM car. Like his father before him …

When it comes to using bicycles to solve the problems of traffic congestion, pollution and dependence on foreign oil, I'd say Europeans are on the right track.
While President Bush mentions plans in the State of the Union address to make the US less dependent on foreign oil (without ever mentioning bicycle use), Paris decided to put up to 14,000 free bicycles on the streets by this summer.
The city has chosen a French advertising firm to set up a free bicycle service with between 14,000 and 20,000 bicycles available at more than 1,000 bike stations …

The person reputed to be the first mountain bike enthusiast in the US has been missing for seven months and is believed to be a victim of murder.
John Finley Scott, 73, is considered one of the earliest mountain bike pioneers by the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, located in Crested Butte, Colorado.
All the way back in 1953, Scott used a Schwinn World diamond frame, balloon tires, flat handlebars, derailleur and cantilever brakes to build his “Woodsie Bike.” That was 20 years before …

Last year's winner of the Tour of California, Tour de Georgia and Tour de France has pretty much ruled out professional cycling this year, Floyd Landis said in an interview at ESPN.com.
The pokey pace of his doping case means he's written off the 2007 season, even if he's vindicated.
I'm glad Landis has stayed motivated the past few months and held onto the prospect of cycling this year, but it doesn't seem much of a surprise that this case has dragged out so long. …

Organizers for the 2007 Breakaway to the Beach MS150 bicycle tour are changing the route for the first time in 12 years.
The Breakaway — touted as the largest bicycling event in the Southeast with 2,500 riders — ended tragically last year when 15-year-old Rachel Giblin and her brother, Tommy, were struck by a passing pickup truck pulling a trailer. Rachel died.
Instead of taking a two-day route from Columbia to North Myrtle Beach, this year the Breakaway to the Beach starts, overnights and finishes at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The fund-raiser for the Multiple Sclerosis Society is scheduled for Sept. 15-16.
Anne Marie Forbes, president of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter, told me about the change of plans …

The Withlacoochee State Trail's 46-mile length makes it the longest rail-trail in Florida and a great route for bicycling.
Featured as Trail of the Month by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, the path runs between Citrus Springs in the north and Trilby in the south in an area generally between Tampa and Orlando.
While the trail is open to all, its path through small towns, ranches and natural areas of the Withlacoochee State Forest means bicyclists have the trail all to themselves for long stretches …
