Remember that old Saturday Night Live joke?
“I'm from New Jersey.” “Oh yeah? What exit?”
That retort could be rewritten to “What bicycle route?” as the New Jersey Department of Transportation has published three more bicycle route guides to make an even dozen that are available online for cyclists.
The three are Burlington County Bikeways, Cape May Shoreline Ride and Cumberland Salem Revolution bicycling guides. Combined, they offer 168 miles of bicycling through New Jersey ….

When I read that the Smithsonian Institution will digitize its collection of 137 million artifacts, I surfed over there to see what the national museum currently has posted online in terms of bicycles.
The museum has photos of 45 bicycles online in its America on the Move Bicycle Collection and a couple of dozen other images of helmets, anti-car buttons and turn-of-the-century pro-bicycling pamplets.
The images in the collection run from a two-wheeled hobby horse manufactured in 1818 to a Schwinn Super Deluxe Sting-Ray made in 1965. There are standard bicycles, ordinary bicycles, bone shakers, and tandems. You'll recognize the names Schwinn, Columbia, Raleigh, and Pierce, among others ….

Here's a vest that displays your speed on your back, letting everyone know how fast you're traveling on your bicycle.
There's more to it than merely showing off, though.
Inventors Brady Clark and Mykle Hansen say there are three goals behind the Speed-Vest: To increase awareness that bicycling is efficient; educate motorists about overtaking bicyclists safely; and demonstrate that a person can easily bike 10-15 mph.
The garment is not yet available commercially, but there's been a lot of interest and they've been talking to potential partners. …

Ad: “Beach bike your way through Emerald Isle, complimentary of Emerald Isle Realty. New weekly reservations arriving during September and October will receive 2 complimentary deluxe beach bicycles.”
I don't know if this is a new idea, but it's certainly a timely one considering the impact of higher gasoline prices on traveling.
When a regular reader sent me the advertisement, he said it might show a new trend of vacation entrepreneurs using bicycles to lure visitors to their resorts. It might even prove that people in the tourism industry are discovering the bicycle is a useful tool for the traveling public.
It reminded me of the real estate agents in Portland and Boulder I wrote about recently who show houses to prospective buyers by bicycle …

With much of the Texas and Louisiana coasts still reeling from the devastation left behind by Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike, it's a good time to call attention to next month's Tour du Rougebicycle ride.
The inaugural six-day bike tour from Houston to New Orleans is a fund-raiser for American Red Cross chapters in the region that provide relief to people displaced by natural disasters.
If you need to know why people combine recreational bicycle riding with fund-raising, check out the current issue of Adventure Cyclist magazine which dedicated its current issue to charity bicycle rides. The Adventure Cycling Association's publication tells stories about people who make the rides and lists 8 fund-raising bike rides, which I've added to Charity Bike Rides calendar …

There's no chance that three Lutheran pastors will become separated on their 13,000-mile bike tour around the US next year. They'll all be on the same bike — a bamboo triplet built by Calfee Designs.
The Tour de Revs is embarking May 13, 2009, to raise awareness and funds to support hunger and wellness programs. The three West Virginia pastors expect the ride will take 100 days.
Pastors Fred Soltow of Shepherdstown, Ron Schlak of Charleston and David Twedt of Wardensville will be making the trip next year to all of the church's synods in the US …

Bicyclists from Georgia and Alabama will ride to a shrimp boil get-together in a farmer's field at the state line in a couple of weeks to celebrate the completion of the longest paved bike path in the US.
With the paving of the last gap of Georgia's Silver Comet bike path last month, the 61.5-mile rail-to-trail combines with the Chief Ladiga bike path to become the longest paved bicycle path in the US at a distance of 95 miles.
Bicycle enthusiasts will leave from trailheads in Georgia and Alabama that morning and arrive at the state line for festivities, food and entertainment at 2 p.m. Sept. 27.
The PATH Foundation flyer (.pdf) explains all the details of the Silver Comet celebration …

The number of bicyclists killed in traffic crashes in 2007 dropped 9.6% from the previous year, the biggest year-to-year drop this decade.
The National Highway Transporation Safety Administration reports 698 “pedalcyclists” were killed in traffic crashes in 2007, compared to 772 in 2006. It was the second year in a row that bicycle fatalities had gone down.
The bureau released the report in August, shortly before this weekend's report by researchers at the University of New South Wales that concludes that the rate of collisions between bikes and cars drops as more people ride their bicycles.
Motorists drive more safely when they see more cyclists and pedestrians around, researchers say ….

Will Frischkorn of Garmin-Chipotle was on hand to defend his title at the Univest Grand Prix in Souderton, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, but it was teammate Lucas Euser who won the 100-mile road race.
It was clear from the video stream that the 131 pro cyclists battled rainy weather all day, but that didn't stop Euser, later joined by Frederick Ericsson (Sweden, Cykel City), from launching a breakaway and turning the final laps into a two-man race.
Although they worked well together to keep the rest of the peloton at bay, Euser attacked on the final lap and beat Ericsson by 13 seconds. Having competed in the Tour de France in July, Garmin-Chipotle completely dominated the race …

One hundred and 47 years after the last Pony Express rider saddled up for the 11-day ride from Sacramento to St. Joseph, two endurance cyclists are following that route.
The two, Spencer Klaassen and Dan Clinkinbeard, are bicycling the 1,800 miles on their own between the two cities that will host the opening of the 2009 Tour of California and the 2008 Tour of Missouri.
They left Sacramento (that's the Pony Express statue I shot in Old Town this winter) on Aug. 24 and were shooting for Marysville, Kansas, before stopping on Friday. The pair expect the trip will take two weeks and will put them in St. Joseph by the beginning of the 2008 Tour of Missouri. …
