As of Saturday, there should be no question as to the best female cyclist in the world.
Nicole Cooke of Great Britain won the women's World Championship road race in Varese, Italy, earning the right to wear the rainbow colored jersey for the next year. That's in addition to the Olympic gold medal she won for women's road race at the Summer Games in Beijing in August.
Of the six US women in the 86-mile race around Varese, Amber Neben finished the highest at 22nd place, 1:46 behind the winner. Neben won the world championship in individual time trial on Wednesday.
The 2008 UCI World Championships end Sunday with the men's road race …

The fastest human on two wheels is:
Lance Armstrong — No. Alberto Contador — No. Sam Whittingham — Yes.
The Canadian bicyclist achieved a decade-long quest by pedaling his kevlar encased recumbent bicycle at more than one-tenth the speed of sound last week in the Nevada desert.
The achievement earned for him the $25,000 .deciMach Prize for human-powered speed.
Whittingham exceeded 82 mph in a run Sept. 18 at Battle Mountain, Nevada, on a stretch of flat highway popular with cyclists attempting the record …

Volunteers are needed to count bicyclists and pedestrians at certain intersections in town and cities across the state of Washington next week.
The state Department of Transportation is taking the tally to set benchmarks to track progress toward the state's goal of encouraging people to get out of their cars.
The DOT and the Cascade Bicycle Club are looking for volunteers to count people bicycling and walking on paths, bike lanes, sidewalks and other facilities on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and 2 (that's Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday).

David Zabriskie achieved a podium finish at the UCI World Championships in the individual time trial on Thursday, finishing third behind Bert Grabsch of Germany and Svein Tuft of Canada.
Levi Leipheimer finished in 4th place, about 14 seconds behind Zabriskie. Those two were the only US cyclists in the competition.
The current world champion in the individual time trial, Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland, did not compete. He won the gold at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing last month …

Is there someone you met on a bicycle tour this year who you think deserves recognition for the help they offer bicyclists?
Then you need to drop everything and fill out the Bicycle Travel Awards nominations at Adventure Cycling. The deadline is Sept. 30.
At left is my picture of June Curry taken 24 years ago. She's the famous “Cookie Lady” of Afton, Virginia, and was certainly deserving of having the Trail Angel award named for her in 2003.
Since then, the Adventure Cycling organization has added three other awards. Here's a list of all the Bicycle Travel Awards. You can make nominations for any except the “volunteer award:” ….

Montreal became the latest city to launch a self-service bicycle rental service on Sunday when 40 Bixi prototypes hit the streets.
The name Bixi is derived from bicycle and taxi. When the program undergoes its full-launch in Spring 2009, Montreal will have 2,400 rental bicycles available at 300 stations around the city.
Because of that city's harsh weather, the Bixis only will be available from mid-April through mid-November.
The program is similar to the well-known Velib program in Paris ….

The Kona Bicycle Co. recently rolled its one-millionth bicycle off the assembly line after about 20 years in Ferndale, Washington.
Now the company wants to create a Willie Wonka-style lottery to celebrate the manufacture of the special bike, a Cinder Cone, pictured here.
The Cinder Cone was the first bicycle that Kona made, back in 1988. The durable hardtail has evolved, but the name lives on. Kona has made about 77,155 Cinder Cones, making it the company's most popular bike …

If you're fortunate enough to visit the Yosemite National Park in California, don't forget your bicycle the next time you go.
At first it's a scary thought. Some of the roads in the Yosemite Valley are as congested in the peak summer tourist season as anything in a big city.
But that traffic dwindles down between Labor Day and Memorial Day. And you probably won't be on the road anyway. There is a network of 12 miles of bicycle trails around the valley (see green line on map) that connect many of the attractions and carry you far from the hustle and bustle …

If you want children to learn about healthy habits, who better to pass along the information than a bicycle traveler carrying 70 pounds of equipment some 60 miles a day from coast-to-coast.
That bicyclist is 27-year-old Chris Figureida. He's making his second cross-country bike trip — Cycle for Heart — to educate school children about the importance of proper nutrition and leading an active lifestyle in order to prevent obesity.
He left from Neah Bay on Washington state's Olympic Peninsula on Sept. 7, and he's already spoken to students in Seattle and Olympia. His itinerary calls for him to continue riding southeasterly until he reaches Key West ….
