Salsa recalls handlebars stems; bicycles

Salsa Bicycles is recalling 8,600 faulty handlebar stems after receiving three reports that they broke or cracked under normal use.

The handlebar stems were sold as individual aftermarket items and installed on bicycles from November 2007 to December 2008.

Salsa requests that consumers stop using bikes equipped with the CroMoto S.U.L. handlebar stem and return the bikes to dealers for free inspection and replacement …

How to put stimulus money to work for bicyclists and pedestrians

When President Obama signed the federal Economic Recovery Package into law recently, it included funding that could be used on bicycle and pedestrian projects in every state.

AmericaBikes and the Safe Routes to School Partnership are two of the many advocacy groups that are recommending how local advocates can ensure that the federal money gets to local bicycling and pedestrian projects.

One of their targets is the so-called Transportation Enhancements, generally 3% of the highway funding allocation to states. This is a direct source of funding for most bike lanes, bike paths, sidewalks and other such facilities.

Nationwide, that's nearly $803 million …

Amazing Race host takes cross-country bike tour for MS

Phil Keoghan is getting real with an amazing bicycle tour this spring.

The host of “The Amazing Race” reality TV show is embarking from Los Angeles on March 28 for a cross-country bicycle tour to raise money and awareness for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The MS Society has chosen the bicycle as a successful form of fund-raising. The non-profit sponsors more than 100 one- to two-day charity bicycle rides around the US every year. Combined, the rides raise about $65 million annually.

Latest peloton theft victim — Dave Zabriskie

While Dave Zabriskie was earning a second-place finish at the Amgen Tour of California last week, person or persons unknown were helping themselves to belongings in Zabriskie's Salt Lake City home.

The report comes a little more than a week after Lance Armstrong announced to world via Twitter that his time trial bicycle had been stolen after the prologue in Sacramento.

That one-of-a-kind bicycle was eventually recovered. Zabriskie announced his much-greater loss to Twitter as well:

“My house was broken into while at TOC. They took everything …

Suggestions needed for Twin Bridges, Montana, bicycle camp

This scene from Twin Bridges, Montana, might have made an impression on bike travelers pedaling through on the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail over the years.

Those bicycle tourists certainly made an impression on the people of Twin Bridges, population 400.

In fact, those cyclists have made such a good impression that citizens of the town in southwestern Montana are creating a bicycle campground right on the shores of the Beaverhead River.

The only problem is that the folks in Twin Bridges don't tour by bicycle, so they need some help to determine what's needed at the campground.

Bill White of Twin Bridges recently contacted Adventure Cycling Association …

One bike tour begins; another ends early

World bicycle travelers Pat and Cat Patterson (at left) are on the road again, but Robert Hollandsworth is having to abandon his bike tour in Texas.

Two years after they completed a four-year bicycle tour through 57 countries on 4 continents, the Pattersons are pedaling their loaded bicycles through foreign lands again — this time in Southeast Asia.

The Pattersons are proof that it's never too late to fulfill your dreams. They're both survivors of messy divorces who built a successful real estate business in southern California until they realized it was time to stop the rat race and see the world

Pat, who's pushing 70, and Cat, in her late 50s, explain their motivations …

Rexburg, Idaho: Bicycling 6 mph on Main Street earns a ticket

Welcome to Rexburg, Idaho, where bicycles are prohibited on plank sidewalks and the bicycle speed limit on Main Street is 5 mph; 12 mph elsewhere in town.

Don't worry. If you get a $25 ticket, you can work it off for $2 a day by working on village streets.

If those laws sound a little strange, it's because they were enacted in 1901 when hot-dogging thrill-seekers on bicycles were the scourge of many towns. Members of the Trails of Madison County committee are suggesting many changes to those laws …

2009 Chilly Hilly fashion advice — raingear and fenders

CHill08.18

Last year's sunny blue skies aren't expected to make a repeat performance at the 2009 Chilly Hilly bike ride that kicks off the Puget Sound area recreational cycling season on Sunday.

It might be sunny on Friday, but the weather forecast for Bainbridge Island on Sunday is flat-out rain.

I hope the forecasters are wrong on that, but I'll suggest reattaching fenders, tightening up the brakes a bit, and digging out the Gor-Tex raingear. Probably take along an extra pair of gloves and maybe wool socks …

A website where bicycle theft victims can tell their stories

A lot of people are saying that Lance Armstrong's alert to the 145,00 members of his Twitterati helped in the quick recovery of his time trial bicycle.

For the rest of us who don't have that clout, there's a website where we can share our stories. It's called “Someone Stole My Bike.”

The website features video stories of bike theft victims, some who lost their bikes for good and others, like Kristy (shown here), who chased down the thief, grabbed him by the backpack and dragged him to the ground …
