Nancy Shepherd must not mind the prospect of hitting the Big 5-0. She used her upcoming birthday as an opportunity to embark on a bicycle tour of the perimeter of the U.S.
I remember how I celebrated by 50th: My friend flew out to visit me at my home in Austin at the time and we rode 50 miles that weekend. It was in the winter off-season, but now it seems lame.
Now I'm inspired to do something more grand for my 60th, which is on the horizon. Thanks Nancy.
Nancy writes that she started thinking about a big challenge when the signs of aging began to show themselves ….

If you're in Seattle this weekend, you should head over to the 2009 Seattle International Bike Expo at Magnuson Park on Saturday and Sunday.
The show has been presented by the Cascade Bicycle Club annually since 1988. This year it features 150 displays of bicycles, cycling gear, bike touring opportunities and companies that offer health and fitness products.
The show has a rather nomadic past, traveling around to different locations in the Seattle area. This year it's back at Hangar 30 at Magnuson Park. It's easy to get to by bicycle (valet bike parking is available) and there's plenty of parking for cars a short walk away …

We all know that bicycle commuting has many benefits. But an ardent bicyclist I know recently learned that cutting back mileage on his state vehicle can have some unexpected drawbacks.
Russell writes about this Catch-22 at his Flying Abalone Bike Club blog.
A biologist employed by the state of Washington, Russell took notice last year when Gov. Christine Gregoire asked employees to cut fuel consumption by 5%. He uses a state vehicle for his wide-ranging field work and meetings at the headquarters, but he started “parking short” and riding his bicycle when he could …

Ending his quiet spring, American Christian Vande Velde of the Garmin-Slipstream pro cycling team won Stage 4 of the Paris-Nice bicycle race on Wednesday.
The Illinois cyclist joined a breakaway early in the 107-mile race from Vichy to St. Etienne and attacked on the sixth, and final climb of the day to ride away to a solo victory.
It was just what he needed, after crashing in the opening time trial and losing more than two minutes in Tuesday's rainy stage…

A weekend crash in British Columbia involving bicyclists and a passing car raises the safety issue of bicycle riding two or more abreast.
The 2008 Olympic silver medalist in the triathlon event is among a group of about 20 cyclists who could be charged with not riding single file in a crash on Vancouver Island.
A car came upon the cyclists, riding three and four abreast, crossed the yellow line, and began passing in the oncoming lane as another car pulled onto the road in that lane.
The collision knocked the passing car into the bicyclists, taking out about 15 riders. Two were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Olympic medalist Scott Whitfield was near the front and wasn't hit …

When I pedaled my aged Rockhopper mountain bike on an out-and-back ride on the John Wayne Pioneer Trail last summer, I had no idea that I was riding the most popular rail-trail destination in North America.
I only saw about a dozen people on bicycles on my 50-mile ride, and no hikers. Maybe the reason was because it was the middle of the week and the trail starts at a park about 35 miles from Seattle.
In any case, based on internet traffic to its 44,000 trails listed at Trails.com, the former railroad grade of the Milwaukee Road is judged the most popular rail-trail. The votes comprise page views, trail downloads and trail rankings …

“No this is not an official Bike2Work event where we are inticed to ride to work by fine food and prizes. This is just ride your bike to work for fun and adventure. Tomorrow promises to be a beautiful day. It's the next day of the rest of your life.
“See you on the road.”
That's the message left on the Chattanooga Bicycle Club forum Thursday night by David Meek just hours before he was struck and killed by a passing truck on Friday morning.
It shows how much Meek enjoyed bicycling and how he wanted others to share that joy. In addition to being the owner of Privateer Hand-made Performance Bicycles, the 51-year-old was an active member of the bicycle club and leader of the annual Tour de Charohala Challenge. …
