A grisly finish to Belgium bike race and the blame game

Here's the nasty finish at the Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen in Belgium on Wednesday via Cycling.tv. It just amazes me that this doesn't happen more often.

The good news was that Alessandro Petacchi won his first-ever race in Belgium with this sprint. The bad news is that seven riders were injured, among them Robbie McEwen (who broke a rib and was treated for a suspected concussion) and Tom Boonen.

In the aftermath, the first rider to go down,  Greg Van Avermaet, blamed Petacchi for the crash. McEwen blamed Avermaet, who ran into him and started the chain reaction. …

Drinking and bicycling is no laughing matter

The thought of an inebriated bicyclist weaving down the road conjures up a funny picture, but statistics show that drunken bicycling is no laughing matter.

A recent New York Times blog report says a New York City study found over a 10-year-period that 21% of bicyclists killed in traffic crashes had alcohol in their bloodstream.

Data in a National Highway Transportation Safety Administration report is even more sobering: In 2007, nearly one-fourth of cyclists killed in traffic crashes had a blood alcohol content of .08% or higher.

If you're behind the wheel of a car, a .08 blood alcohol level will earn you a drunken driving charge in all 50 states. …

League names 8 bike shops of the year for 2008

SportShop sticker

I was happy to see one of my old haunts listed among the 8 Bicycle Shops of 2008 chosen by members of the League of American Bicyclists.

The League polled its members to name their favorite bicycle shops and tell why. Shops with the most votes in each of the League's 6 regions were named. One region had a 3-way tie, so a total of 8 shops got the nod.

The winners are …

A visit to bicycle-centric University of Oregon

Eugene might be called Track City because of its history with running events at the University of Oregon, but what caught my eye on a recent visit were the thousands of bicycles.

I've been on a whirlwind tour of some Northwest colleges lately with my high school senior son, and my unofficial observations found the University of Oregon to be the most bike-centric of any campus.

It stands to reason: Eugene has been judged a silver level bicycle-friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists …

U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame moving to bike-friendly Davis

Congratulations to all you bicycling enthusiasts in Davis, California. Your city has been chosen as the new home of the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame.

Board members of the Hall of Fame, located in Somerville, New Jersey, had been looking to relocate for the past year, ever since the museum's home was sold for development.

More than a dozen cities made a bid for the Hall of Fame, and the contest came down to between Davis and Greensboro, North Carolina, in recent weeks.

Davis was picked because it has adopted the bicycle like no other city …

Yehuda Moon comic strip on hiatus

Bad news for fans of Yehuda Moon & Kickstand Cyclery.

Comic strip creator Rick Smith posted a cartoon of his character parking his bicycle. Above the strip there's this message:

“A good spot to stop for a while. Yehuda Moon on hiatus.”

“Dear Readers,

“I regret that this will be the last day of 'Yehuda Moon' for a while. I ran out of time and can't continue with the comic. …

Bicycle-only season at Yellowstone National Park

It's spring, the time of year when bicyclists rule the road at the Yellowstone National Park.

With park road crews clearing snow and preparing the roads for motorized traffic, certain park roads have been opened to bicycle-only traffic.

Since March 21, bicyclists have been allowed to ride between West Yellowstone (A), Madison, Norris, and Mammoth Hot Springs (B), a distance of about 54 miles.

Cyclists will have the roads to themselves for about a month before the RVs, Winnebagos, and other motor vehicles arrive. But expect to run into the park's year-around visitors. …

Global bicycle trekker Pablo Garcia in Qatar

It's 59 countries and counting for an Argentinian bicycle traveler who has been on the road for some nine years.

Pablo Garcia, 35, is riding his heavily laden bicycle around the Middle East now, recently making headlines on his arrival in Qatar. He already has bicycled through South America, Africa and Europe.

Bicycling more than 44,000 miles so far, Garcia has said:

“The crux of the trip is to transmit a message of tolerance and respect. We need to respect each other, different cultures, and to live together in peace …

Bicyclist needs one more ride to achieve complete US circuit

Here's a bicycling achievement that I'm sure not too many people have accomplished.

At 68 years old, Al Emma is waiting for the One Helena Hundred to roll around on July 18 this summer in Montana. When he completes that ride, he will have finished organized century rides in all 50 states.

Just as amazing, to me, is that he's done them all since 2002.

What a treasure-trove of patches and route maps he must own, not to mention the memories of favorite dishes at rest stops and the visions of Dan Henrys etched in his brain.

Al first contacted me to ask if there were a club or organization for souls who had ridden organized centuries in all 50 states. I couldn't find any (if you know of any, please leave a comment below). I asked about some of his impressions from his amazing bicycling journey the past 7 years …
