A bicycle industry association whose mission is to encourage more people to ride their bikes awarded $30,000 this fall to bike trails in Massachusetts, West Virginia, South Carolina, Nebraska and Missouri.
The grants from the Bikes Belong Coalition will help make repairs and improvements to bike trails in some cases, while helping to get others “shovel ready.”
A prime example is the $10,000 awarded for repairs in Morgantown, West Virginia, to the Decker Creek Trail, part of a 48-mile network of trails. The grant to the Monongahela River Trails Conservancy …

A week ago Monday I wrote a post about a dozen Cranksgiving bike rides rolling out around the U.S. this month to collect Thanksgiving items for local food banks.
Some, like the one in St. Louis, draw upwards of 800 cyclists. Unfortunately, I couldn't find such a ride for Seattle.
Tom Fucoloro over at the Seattle Bike Blog read the story and immediately started to make it happen. Thanks to his efforts, Seattle's First Cranksgiving will happen this coming Saturday.
Here are the details…..

Nova Scotia is the first province in Canada to consider a law that requires motorists give bicyclists 1 metre of space — slightly more than 3 feet — when passing.
So far, 16 U.S. states have put 3-foot passing laws on the books to protect bicycle riders.
The legislation introduced Monday by Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Bill Estabrooks has other requirements as well ….

Some of us might consider a bicycle touring trip from the tip of South Africa to Saudi Arabia as the ultimate extreme adventure.
For two Muslims in their 20s, however, the self-contained bicycle pilgrimage to Mecca was a religious experience.
Imtiyaz Ahmad Haron and Nathim Cairncross traveled across more than 3,000 miles of roads in Africa and the Middle East over the past 9 months to participate in this year's Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca for a series of religious observances …..

Many of us are still getting over the fact that a 4-year-old girl who accidentally hit and injured a New York City woman with her bicycle can be sued for negligence.
Now a man serving a 10-year manslaughter sentence in a Connecticut prison is suing the parents of a 14-year-old he struck and killed, alleging negligence because they let him ride his bicycle in the street without a helmet. …..

It's time to start thinking hard about replacing that hanging bicycle calendar before it becomes seriously obsolete and you're left with a big old blank spot on the wall.
Here are a handful of cycling calendars, from the erotic to the exotic to the epiodic, that I've stumbled across over the past few weeks. I'm sure one of them might suit your needs.
CyclePassion returns with its 2011 wall calendar that is famous for featuring female cycling athletes in more relaxed poses than hunched over the handlebars splattering mud on a singletrack course.
You might not recognize her without her helmet, jersey and spandex, but that's the US's Willow Koerber, who won a bronze at the Mountain Bike World Championships in Quebec this year.
Also pictured in 2011 …

Giant Bicycle is recalling 370 mountain bikes because the aluminum frame can crack where the top tube and seatpost meet.
The bike in question is the 2011 Anthem X 29er 1, 2, and 3 models. The competition-level bicycles went on sale in August and sold for between $2,200 and $3,500.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that no accident or injuries have been reported, but urges owners to stop using them immediately….

Bicycle City isn't just a state of mind; it's the name of a small community that's set for a ceremonial groundbreaking in December in the countryside near Columbia, South Carolina.
Drawing his inspiration from Mackinac Island, Michigan, where cars have been banned for more than 100 years, Internet entrepreneur Joe Mellett is pushing ahead with his plans for a car-free community.
The Columbian newspaper reports that Mellett will offer home lots for sale and begin building a community center with rooms for rent and a small market early next year on the 160-acre development about 15 miles south of Columbia ….

The Livestrong Foundation is cutting back its Livestrong Challenge Series to three cities in 2011 — Philadelphia, Austin and one in California.
That leaves the Pacific Northwest out of the mix for the first time in six years. Portland hosted an event from 2005 to 2008, and Seattle had the event in 2009 and 2010.
During that time, the six charity bike rides engaged some 11,000 participants to raise funds for the cancer research and survivorship program of the foundation created by Lance Armstrong.
About 1,600 cyclists and runners …

When my pal and I traveled across Missouri on our bicycles, we were struck by the friendliness of the townfolk in Farmington.
Heading west, it was our last pause before heading into the Ozarks. Folks asked if we needed directions, one guy stopped to chat, and the friendly proprietor of a cafe on town square kept our iced tea glasses topped off.
That was 26 years ago, but the folks in Farmington still support the bicyclists passing through town.
The Adventure Cycling Association chose the town of Farmington for the 2010 June Curry Trail Angel Award, named for the always helpful Cookie Lady of Afton, Virginia ….
