Mt. Baker
tunnel suspect
After the attacks on four women in Seattle parks and trails the past few weeks, police are urging women to take measures to ensure their safety.
All of the attacks have occurred after dark against women who were jogging or running alone. The locations — Colman Park, Seward Park and Mt. Baker tunnel area — are all along the western shore of Lake Washington.
Although none of the assaults involved women on bicycles, a Nov. 16 attack occurred near the east entrance of the Mount Baker tunnel, an area used by many bicycle commuters.
When a half dozen bicyclists were pulled off their bikes and mugged in the Mount Baker tunnel area during a period in 2008 and 2009, police and bike advocates urged that bicyclists ride in groups through the area. Riding with a pal or in a group…

Five days of racing at the 2010 Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championships ended in Bend, Ore., on Sunday with the elite men's and women's races.
Live streaming coverage of the men's and women's elite races was available at USA Cycling's website on Sunday.
Plenty of snow earlier in the week, and rain later, made the course nice and sloppy in places. The winners were: …

A new section of trail that connects the High Point Trail and the Preston-Snoqualmie Trail in eastern King County is complete and will be unveiled this week.
State highway crews started on the project in June, and officials will mark the completion of the 1.2-mile packed-gravel trail at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the west end of the connector trail.
The regional trail is the latest addition in the Mountains to Sound Greenway. It will be maintained as part of the King County Regional Trails system.
The trail closes a gap in the network of bicycle trails that connect Golden Gardens Park on Puget Sound to an overlook for Snoqualmie Falls. These trails include the Burke Gilman ….

Seattle Bike Supply is recalling 200 Redline D640 mountain bikes because the head tube can break off from the frame.
The Kent, Washington-based bicycle and parts importer, in conjunction with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, is asking that all owners stop riding the bicycles immediately. They can take them in for a free frame replacement at any Redline dealer.
The company received eight reports of the break at the head tube; four resulted in minor injuries.
The bikes, which were made in China …

An English cyclist who achieved the fastest around-the-world bike tour this past summer is organizing a new event — the Global Bicycle Race.
Vin Cox finished his solo 18,227-mile bike tour in 163 days back in August 2010. He says a race that seeks to break his Guinness World Record would create an atmosphere that draws a lot of press attention and gives cyclists a chance to feed their craving for adventure.
Cox submitted an application for recognition of the bike race to the Guinness World Records this week.
He's suggesting that the race start at Greenwich Park in London on February 18, 2012. That means the next record-setting cyclist would return to the finish just as the 2012 Summer Olympics in London is getting underway …

Robert Hess is looking for a few good men — 8 to be exact — who have had prostate cancer and have the strength and stamina to ride their bicycles across the US at a torrid pace.
Hess, founder of the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project, wants to draw attention to the disease that strikes one out of six men by putting a relay cycling team in the 2012 Race Across America.
RAAM, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2011, is the world's most demanding endurance bike race. It is known for those sleep-deprived solo cyclists who spin more than 3,000 miles from coast to coast in one continuous ride. Their only break is the occasional roadside nap in a support vehicle …

My town of Bellevue, Washington, experienced a substantial increase in the number of bicyclists tallied in its second annual Pedestrian and Bicycle Count this fall.
Although I'd like to report that this points to a growing trend in bicycle commuting, it's probably due to the sunny, albeit cold, weather on Oct. 5, 2010, compared to the blustery, rainy weather on Sept. 29, 2009.
In other words, more people ride their bikes in good weather than bad weather.
Even so, I think it bears reminding the elected officials that bicyclists were counted 600 times at 13 counting stations in the evening …

Bike traveler Mark Beaumont, who at one time held the Guinness World Record for circumnavigating the globe by bicycle in the shortest time, has been honored as the country's Top Scot.
After that record-breaking self-supported bike tour in 2008, the 27-year-old become widely known throughout the British Isles this year on BBC for the “Cycling the Americas” website and documentary that chronicled his bike trip from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego.
The public voted on the “Top Scot” through The Scotsman newspaper; Glenfiddich Single Malt Whiskey sponsored the competition.
The contest honors the Scot who has had the greatest impact in furthering Scotland's reputation ….

“When we reached the scene, however, we saw that we were talking about a massacre. They were all people we knew personally which made it even more painful.”
Those are the words of the Silvio Rocco, a member of Italy's White Cross and one of the first responders to the scene of a crash that claimed the lives of 8 cyclists. They had been out for a Sunday morning club ride near their home in the boot of Italy.
A motorist whose driver's license had been revoked for dangerous driving ran head-on into the group of riders. Six were dead at the scene …

Is it art or the byproduct of a training ride on a stationary bicycle?
Joseph L. Griffiths would argue that it's definitely art.
The Australian artist created the pedal-powered drawing machine in Melbourne as part of his mission to examine the relationship between man and machine.
In this case, the bicycle is outfitted with pulleys, belts and wheels to enable the operator to create crayon drawings on a wall. If the person works up a sweat while creating, then it's all the better.
The drawing machine was unveiled last year ….
