Update: Cascade to offer new ride — RSVP2; February registration details

Because of the huge demand for Ride from Seattle to Vancouver and Party (RSVP) in recent years, the Cascade Bicycle Club has announced it will host a second identical ride this year — dubbed RSVP2 — that leaves one-day later.

Unlike the grandfather ride, registration for the new RSVP2 will be handled on a lottery basis with winners selected by random.

Registration for the lottery runs from next Wednesday, Feb. 9, to Feb. 23 …..

Technology leading travelers astray in the desert

Don't believe everything you read, especially if you're relying on GPS maps in the desert.

The Sacramento Bee has a fascinating story about what one wilderness coordinator in Death Valley calls “death by GPS.” It involves people heading off into the desert with the latest technology and finding themselves directed down roads unsuitable for most cars.

The story doesn't mention bicyclists getting lost and dying in the desert on bad roads; I hope it's because we have the sense to carry enough water and to confirm the suitability of our routes ahead of time ….

3-foot passing bill roundup: rejected in WY and ND

Legislative bills requiring motorists to give bicyclists and pedestrians at least 3 feet of space when passing were rejected in Wyoming and North Dakota in the past week.

Currently, there are 16 states that require a safe-passing distance of 3 feet.

The North Dakota Senate rejected the bill by a vote of 17-29. Opponents doubted there could be “consistent and meaningful” enforement of the law, according to the Grand Forks Herald. …

Convincing communities that bicycling makes dollars and sense

What's one of the best ways to get business and government leaders to support bicycling? Convince them that bicycling brings dollars into their communities.

The Bikes Belong Foundation realizes this and is launching a $40,000 fund this year that pays for research into the economic benefits of bicycle infrastructure and events.

Research over the years has shown that community investment in bicycling has huge dividends. Some of these findings were summarized in a slideshow — “The Economic Benefits of Bicycling” — that the Adventure Cycling Association presented to the South Dakota Bike Summit last week ….

Ohio woman's inspirational recovery from bike collision

Countless times we read about a bicyclist injured in a collision with a car, consider it a blessing the person wasn't killed, then never give it another thought.

The Cincinnati Enquirer, however, published a thought-provoking story this weekend about the suffering and rehabilitation facing a young woman, Alison Delgado, who nearly died after she was hit by a car in October.

What makes the story so inspirational is how Alison, and her husband, Tim, [that's them at left] have faced the hardships together. What makes it so moving is that Tim was the physician on the med-evac helicopter called in to transport from one hospital to another the unidentified bike crash victim, who he soon discovered to be his wife. …

2011 RAGBRAI and Biking Across Kansas host cities announced

Bicyclists who plan to take off across Iowa and Kansas this summer now know where they'll be staying as the routes for those across-state bicycle rides were announced on Saturday.

The announcement is especially huge for the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) because businesses and charities in the small towns stand to make a million or more dollars off the 10,000 cyclists and other visitors who spend the night.

The host cities were revealed at an announcement party in Des Moines Saturday night. The 39th annual RAGBRAI will roll out for 454 miles from July 24-30 on a west to east route through the following host cities:…

Injured bicyclist offered settlement from Texas county

A woman thrown from her bicycle when her front tire lodged in a large crack in a poorly maintained road has been offered a $48,500 settlement in Texas.

Commissioners in Travis County, the former home of Lance Armstrong, voted to make the offer to bicyclist Alejandra Cornelius, 31, who suffered serious dental injuries when she did a header over the handlebars.

When considered with some other cases here in the Pacific Northwest, it proves that the old saying, “You can't sue city hall,” is not always true ….

Alert bicyclist helps save lost dog in Pennsylvania

Bicyclists are usually the victims in stories involving dogs, as they're either getting chased or bitten by loose canines.

Here's a story about a bicyclist who helped rescue a lost dog, which is why Bill Myers is considered a hero among some people around Carlisle, Pennsylvania, these days.

The part-German shepherd, named Daisy Mae (at left), had escaped into the cold farm country from a vehicle a week earlier. She was being transported from her home in West Virginia to a rescue shelter in New Jersey after her owners had to move and could no longer care for her …

Reward offered for hit-and-run in Levi's Gran Fondo

A reward will be offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the motorist who appeared to intentionally hit one of the bicyclists in the 2010 Levi Leipheimer's King Ridge Gran Fondo last fall.

The Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition and VeloStreet, the non-profit owner of the bike ride, are launching a fund-drive to raise $10,000 for the reward. The bike coalition says:

“The community must not tolerate those who harass and injure cyclists. Let's raise $10,000 to make sure this driver is held accountable.”

Anyone can donate to the reward at the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition website ….

Tractor for sale; no charge for rust

For all you pickers out there, I spied this old tractor for sale in a field while I was out for a bike ride yesterday.

I've seen this old agricultural beast sitting out here for several years, but never noticed the “For Sale” sign posted on the barbed wire fence. I always thought it was some type of yard art.

I understand this low-mileage cream-puff was used by a little old lady who only drove it on Sundays. The factory-paint was John Deere green, but that was later customized ….
