As fall becomes winter in the Pacific Northwest, I keep expecting the permanent overcast skies to roll in and bring the drizzle that keeps me in rain gear all winter long.
We've had our share of nasty days already, but Saturday was not one of them. Clear skies and temperatures in the low 50s coaxed me outside on my bicycle. …

Is your 2012 bike tour going to be a Rocky Mountain High? Or are you California Dreamin'?
In either case, you have a dozen multi-day bike tours scheduled this summer in Colorado and California from which to choose.
Some are mass bike rides with hundreds of cyclists, such as Ride the Rockies presented by the Denver Post. Others are more intimate affairs with fewer than 20 riders offered by Adventure Cycling Association.
I'm updating the list of Across-State Bicycle Rides for 2012, so there are dates and host cities …

Update: Nov. 1, 2011 — Advocates are undoubtedly rejoicing after the Senate on Tuesday rejected 60-38 the latest attempt by Republicans to kill federal funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects.
Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky offered the amendment that would have redirected the transportation enhancement funds to pay for bridge repairs. It was the third threat against that funding in the past two months.
Although the GOP is batting 0-3 on the measure, the issue is expected to come up again…

On my birthday bicycle ride to bike the miles of my age in January, I set my annual goal to complete 4,000 miles by the end of the year.
Instead of slogging through ankle-deep snow to complete the required miles, like 2009, I've completed my personal challenge by the end of October: 4,009 miles.
A lot of my success is due to the training and riding the 500-mile Biking Across Kansas in June with my son. Not only did that directly add miles to the total, but it boosted my endurance so I was comfortable going longer distances …

Cycling fans can meet Wenatchee born and bred sprinter Tyler Farrar and other pro cyclists at events in Renton and Seattle in November.
Farrar is considered the best pro cycling sprinter to come out of the US in recent years; maybe ever. In just the past two years, he has individual wins at the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana.
In sprint stages across the European continent, the Garmin Cervelo team tactics always include a way to maneuver Farrar to the front of the peloton as they approach the finish.
The first meet-up with Farrar takes place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 26 at Peterson's Bicycle Shop in Renton. ….

Opportunity knocks if you want to spend seven months of the year on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon renting bicycles to tourists.

No high-tech rain repellent clothing system for this guy. A simple umbrella will do.
I passed him on the way back from a bike ride up the Cedar River Trail to enjoy the fall colors, look out for sockeye salmon in the river, and check out the new Cedar to Green River Trail extension.
A guy on Biking Across Kansas …

Trek Bicycle is recalling 27,000 bicycles — such as the 7.2 FX WSD — in the US and Canada to fix a bolt that clamps the saddle to the seatpost. The bolt can break, causing the bicycle rider to fall.
Trek and consumer protection agencies in the US and Canada are urging consumers to stop riding the bicycles until they can contact a Trek dealer for a free replacement bolt.
The recall affects 16 brands of 2012 model Trek FX and District bikes …

Urban cargo bikes come in all shapes and sizes, but this is certainly a first as it looks all the world like a giant sperm.
That's intentional. The bike pictured here carries frozen sperm from the European Sperm Bank in Copenhagen to fertility clinics around town.
And now Seattle has it's own version of the sperm bank bike that makes deliveries from European Sperm Bank's Seattle lab north of University of Washington to fertility clinics on First Hill …

A bicycle club's plot to get people off their butts and onto their bike saddles next year became clear as the Cascade Bicycle Club announced its slate of rides and events for 2012.
To avoid a repeat of this year's online server meltdown at registration time, Cascade is instituting a lottery for RSVP and RSVP2 (Ride from Seattle to Vancouver and Party) and staggered registration for other rides.
That should make club members, as well as their employers, happy. People waited online 2 to 4 hours on registration day only to be kicked out of the system. Cascade says it doesn't want a repeat of that experience …
