Lance Armstrong on The Colbert Report

Lance Armstrong has parried with the French media, but I'm sure he's never had it so bad as when he takes the hot seat for questioning by Stephen Colbert on Comedy Central's The Colbert Report.

Armstrong is scheduled to appear on the show at 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT) Wednesday. It is rebroadcast throughout the following day and segments will also be shown online at The Colbert Report website on Thursday.

The seven-time Tour de France winner will be there to talk about his efforts to fight cancer through the Lance Armstrong Foundation. One can only guess at the sordid topics the Colbert will want to discuss.

Last season for Discovery Channel to sponsor cycling team

Do you have $15 million a year to spend to support your interest in cycling? Then you can pick up sponsorship of the bicycling team made famous by Lance Armstrong at the end of the year.

The Discovery Channel cable network says a corporate restructuring means it will no longer sponsor the bicycling team owned by Tailwind Sports, which is looking for someone else to foot the bill.

Bill Stapleton, part owner of the team, said they've already talked to several potential sponsors, but the combination of the costs and bad publicity from doping allegations in the sport is making it a tough sell.

Remember the Phonak-iShare deal last year? …

Lance Armstrong heading to South Korea bike race

Lance Armstrong, who has spent a lot of time with his Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team in the Solvang training camp recently, reportedly is heading to Asia this fall.

A South Korean newspaper says the seven-time Tour de France winner will head to that country in September to promote a bicycle road race.

Apparently Armstrong …

The future of that Lance Armstrong movie

Slowly but surely that movie based on Lance Armstrong's “It's Not About the Bike” is making its way onto the screen.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Sony's Columbia Pictures division is looking for a treatment that's more like the personal drama of  “Raging Bull” than a bicycling story that would be reminiscent to the inspirational “Chariots of Fire.”

Producer Frank Marshall, currently filming another sequel to the “Bourne Identity” and in pre-production for sequels to “Indiana Jones” and “Jurassic Park,” maintains the Armstrong film won't be a puff piece. “This isn't going to be Lance the beauty queen” …

Bikeway in Austin named for Lance Armstrong

Construction on a 6-mile bikeway across Lance Armstrong's adopted hometown of Austin is expected to start this spring.

Talk about the Lance Armstrong Bikeway started in 2000, but the plans, access and funding has taken this long for approval. It's expected to be completed in 2008.

Another bikeway in Austin is the Veloway, pictured at left. Allocation of funds made it controversial when it was built in the '90s, but it's said to be well-used now.

For those familiar with Austin….

Armstrong vs. Landis: Good idea while it lasted

One of the hottest match-ups for the coming year — Lance Armstrong vs. Floyd Landis at the Leadville 100 — has apparently fizzled out.

Armstrong announced at The Paceline website that he will not be racing in the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race on Aug. 11, 2007, as previously indicated due to a “scheduling conflict.”

I'm marking that date on my calendar just to see …

It's official: Landis vs. Armstrong in Leadville 100

This is like one of those fantasy matches: “What if Satchel Paige pitched against Ichiro,” or “What if Johnny Unitas' Baltimore Colts took on Peyton Manning's Indianapolis Colts?”

The Floyd Landis camp issued a press release Tuesday that their guy is going to get on his mountain bike and race in the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race, scheduled Aug. 11, 2007, in Leadville, Colorado.

Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong had already agreed to ride in Leadville. This sets up a challenge between two Tour de France winners in a slightly different contest.

Who's missing? Three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond, of course. Wouldn't that be a wild contest? …

Quote: Successful Lance Armstrong fails at retirement

(Update: Armstrong to ride Leadville 100 bike race next year; see inside)
“Yeah, I'm pretty much flunking at retirement. I didn't know how much I would miss my sport and all that it provided, both good and bad. From a physical standpoint, I miss the hard training. But I don't miss the racing.”

— Lance Armstrong responding to a question regarding his life after retiring from professional cycling. The 7-time Tour de France bicycle race champion …

Lance Armstrong NYC Marathon results

Congratulations, Sergio Pinzon of New Jersey. You finished just ahead of the winningest-ever Tour de France bicycle racer in his inaugural attempt at a 26.2-mile footrace.

Lance Armstrong met his goal of achieving an under 3-hour marathon on Sunday at the ING New York City Marathon by finishing in 2 hours, 59 minutes and 36 seconds. For those who time themselves at shorter distances, that's a 6:51 per mile average.

You can chalk it up as another case of  Armstrong setting a high-end goal for himself and achieving it.

Armstrong ran with 38,000 other runners in the annual race through the streets of New York City. The 35-year-old Texan finished in 856th place (later official results placed him in 869th). He told …

See Armstrong run on LanceCam. Run, Lance, run

Lance Armstrong takes to the streets of New York City on Sunday for the ING New York City Marathon.

I don't know if the 7-time Tour de France bike race winner chose to do this on a whim, or if it was sparked by a deal with his shoe sponsors. But outside of the world of marathon runners, he's probably the best known person in the field of 37,000.

That's why MediaZone is adding a special “LanceCam” to its live online coverage …
