It's true — Lance Armstrong comes out of retirement

He's back.

Lance Armstrong on Tuesday confirmed reports that he would return to professional cycling in 2009 and make a run for an 8th Tour de France championship.

While not naming a team, he said it would be managed by Johan Bruyneel, his former director sportif at Postal and Discovery and currently at Team Astana.

According to a statement read by Armstrong on his Livestrong.com website:

“I am happy to announce that after talking with my children, my family and my closest friends, I have decided to return to professional cycling in order to raise awareness of the global cancer burden. …

“The reason for this is to launch an international cancer strategy.”

It's also to open a can of whoop-ass on the peloton …

Lance Armstrong coming out of retirement in 2009?

I checked the date and it's not April 1st, so I'll pass along this report in VeloNews that Lance Armstrong will return to bicycle racing with Team Astana in 2009.

The anonymous sources told Neal Rogers of VeloNews that Armstrong will race at the Amgen Tour of California, Paris-Nice, the Tour de Georgia, the Dauphine-Libere and the Tour de France.

One of the few shreds of hard evidence in the report is the fact that Armstrong — who turns 37 on Sept. 18 — re-enrolled in the US Anti-Doping Agency's out-of-competition testing pool. Rules state that any athlete coming out of retirement must enroll in the USADA out of competition testing program at least six months before becoming eligible …

Lance Armstrong is Austin's top residential water user

It sounds like Lance Armstrong might be over-hydrating.

The city of Austin reports that Armstrong was billed $1,630 for 222,900 gallons in June and $2,460 for 330,000 gallons in July for water usage at his 1-acre estate. No residence in Austin used more water.

Armstrong has been out in California and Colorado the past couple of months, according to reports. I wonder if he ever got the feeling that maybe he left the water running in the bathtub at home…

Wiens wins Leadville; Armstrong in second

Two of the best obliterated the field in the Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race in Colorado on Saturday, with David Wiens pulling away from Lance Armstrong near the finish for the win.

In spite of the loss, it shows that the 7-time Tour de France winner is still in incredible shape. With all the travelling, speaking engagements, high-profile dating, etc., 36-year-old Armstrong finished within 2 minutes of the now six-time Leadville winner.

The same can be said for the fitness level of  43-year-old Wiens. Last year he held off a challenge by former mountain biker and Tour de France competitor Floyd Landis. VeloNews said Wiens' victory this year was 13 minutes faster than last year's course record that he set against Landis, who fell during the race …

Lance Armstrong on roster of Leadville 100 this year

What did I do in the olden days when a promising relationship turned sour?  Go for a nice long bike ride.

This morning I read Lance Armstrong and Kate Hudson decided to part ways, and this afternoon I hear that Armstrong plans to compete in the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race on Aug. 9.

Maybe it's just a coincidence. Armstrong said he was going to do the mountain bike race last year, but he had to cancel when another committment arose. Floyd Landis did ride last year, and finished second place to David Wiens…

Armstrong making 3rd appearance at RAGBRAI

Lance Armstrong joined the 10,000 bicyclists rolling toward Ames on Tuesday in the third day of 2008 RAGBRAI.

It's the 7-time Tour de France winner's third visit to RAGBRAI. He joined up somewhere west of Boone and stopped there for awhile before heading to Ames, reported the Des Moines Register.

His appearance isn't causing the stir as in previous years, when some warned the week-long bike tour across Iowa was in danger of being renamed LAGBRAI. He will be joined by some 200 riders on Team Livestrong at RAGBRAI this year. …

New York Times profiles both Lance Armstrongs

If you're feeling a little out-of-touch with Lance Armstrong these days, there's a profile running on the cover of the Sunday's Fashion and Style section that brings us up to date.

Entitled “It's Not About the Bike,” the article examines the two sides of Lance — anticancer champion and Texas playboy.

The 7-time Tour de France champion and cancer survivor was running around New York City recently to promote his new commercial website — livestorng.com, billed as a health, fitness and lifestyle website created in conjunction with Demand Media.

Meanwhile, his livestrong.org website is still a destination for people seeking answers or support about cancer issues …

Lance Armstrong wheelin' around with Kate Hudson?

The global gossip press launched into fits of speculation after Lance Armstrong was seen taking a couple of dinners this past weekend in Austin with actress Kate Hudson.

Hudson formerly dated actor Owen Wilson, who is one of Armstrong's Hollywood celebrity friends. Wilson also once dated singer Sheryl Crowe. Therefore, spotting Hudson and Armstrong together raised the possibilities for a new Armstrong romance.

The Defamer.com threw cold water on the entire episode, however. The blog notes the “cozy” dinner comprised a group of six people, not including four kids, and Armstrong and Hudson didn't even sit together. …

Mellow Johnny's — Lance Armstrong proprietor

When rookie downtown shopowner Lance Armstrong opens the doors to Mellow Johnny's in Austin today, it will probably mark the biggest grand opening for a bike shop in the history of cycling. At least in this country.

The 18,000-square-foot shop at Fourth and Nueces is located a block from the Lance Armstrong Bikeway that will roll through town. Armstrong originally touted it as a store for bike commuters, but it will stock bikes and gear for everyone.

Armstrong, who wrote about his recovery from cancer in “It's Not About the Bike,” told VeloNews:

“It’s more than a place to buy a bike. I want it to be a place where cyclists of all levels come in and are encouraged, inspired, and motivated to make cycling a daily part of life. And of course—a place where racers and enthusiasts can get the best equipment, service, and know-how to go faster—or farther—on their bikes.” …

Lance Armstrong beats 3 hours at Boston Marathon

As cyclists strapped on their cleats to tackle Stage 1 of the Tour de Georgia on Monday, a former winner of that race was lacing up his running shoes to participate in the 2008 Boston Marathon.

Lance Armstrong, running in his third marathon, finished the fabled race in an unofficial time of 2:50:58. The 7-time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor was running to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya won the race …
