First cycling – then Ironman – for Lance Armstrong

It sounds like comeback cyclist Lance Armstrong will come full circle when he's finished with his return to the peloton.

On the eve of his return to pro cycling at the Tour Down Under, an interview published in Outside magazine reveals that he'd like to compete in an Ironman, and “I want to do it as fast as I can.”

Armstrong got his start in sports by excelling as a triathlete, which requires swimming, running and cycling. Biographies say he was a top-ranked triathlete in Texas, where he turned pro at age 16.

We all remember that he achieved greatness as a cyclist, but after winning his 7th Tour de France championship in 2005, Armstrong got back into running by competing in the occasional marathon (shown at right in his first New York City marathon in 2006).

Armstrong isn't oldest cyclist in Tour Down Under peloton

“I'm doing all right for an old man.”

That's what Lance Armstrong told Australia's Ten network after completing his first day of riding around Adelaide in 104-degree heat. “I feel like I’ve trained hard. The difference will be (in) going from training pace to actually racing.”

Even at 37, though, Armstrong isn't the old man in the peloton. At least one, Jens Voigt, (right) is older. By one day.

Armstrong was born Sept. 18, 1971. Voigt was born in Germany on Sept. 17, 1971……

Lance Armstrong's Tour Down Under bike, by the numbers

Here's Lance Armstrong's photo of his just-delivered Trek Madone 6.9 delivered from Madison to Adelaide for the Tour Down Under.

In posting this to TwitPic (higher resolution photo), Armstrong quizzed his Twitter followers about the two special numbers appearing on the frame — 1274 and 27.5.

The “1274” on the seat tube corresponds to the number of days Armstrong has gone without a pro cycling race. The “27.5” represents the 27.5 million people worldwide who have died from cancer in that time …

Quote: Armstrong's expectations for Tour Down Under

“I just don't want to get clobbered too bad. … I don't have any illusions of grandeur. … I hope I get in the race and get re-acclimated to the tempo and the speed and what it is like to be around 200 guys in a fast-moving group.”

Lance Armstrong touched down in Sydney, Australia, to a gaggle of reporters …

Lance Armstrong will stand out — visually — at Tour Down Under

Lance Armstrong will be easy to spot in the Tour Down Under peloton beginning next weekend, regardless of whether he's wearing the leader's jersey.

The 37-year-old comeback cyclist has said he'll be wearing his own black-and-yellow kit during the week-long race and will be riding his own distinctively decorated Trek Madone 6.9 bike.

[Update: Jan. 11 — Armstrong said Saturday morning on Twitter that he'll wear Astana kit in races, but train in Livestrong gear. See the new Astana team jersey that features a yellow Livestrong band on the left sleeve.]

Armstrong is racing on Team Astana for no salary and no bonuses. He has said one of his main purposes in returning to cycling is to draw attention to the global epidemic of cancer. A good way to call attention is to fly the black and yellow colors of LiveStrong. …

Strong roster already committed to Giro d'Italia

Lance Armstrong — at 7 Tour de France championships — will be joined by a host of cycling champions at the 2009 Giro d'Italia.

Carlos Sastre, last year's Tour de France winner, has signed on for the Giro, and Denis Menchov, winner of the Vuelta a Espana in 2005 and 2007 also announced his intention to compete.

Five Giro d'Italia …

Live like Lance Armstrong: Texas ranch on market for $12 million

Lance Armstrong has put his 447-acre ranch in Dripping Springs on the market, complete with the 4-bedroom, 4 bath home and shared access to Deadman's Hole natural swimming pond.

This isn't the Armstrong estate in Austin that made news over the summer for being the top residential water consumer in the city by a factor of four (since greatly reduced).

This is the ranch about 25 miles from Austin where Armstrong got into trouble with his neighbors for dirtying up the shared swimming hole. Apparently some dams he built on his property diverted some sediment into the pond, which he cleaned up to the tune of $850,000 …

Lance Armstrong's fourth child expected in June

When Lance Armstrong comes out of retirement, he really comes out of retirement.

CNN says that Armstrong and girlfriend Anna Hansen are expecting a baby in June. What's so amazing about this is that the couple conceived without the use of any artificial fertilization.

Armstrong was first diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1996. Before undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, he had some sperm stored that was later used to conceive his first three children with his first wife, Kristin …

Armstrong: “Basso is my favorite” at 2009 Giro d'Italia

First-time Giro d'Italia competitor Lance Armstrong taped a message for the 2009 course presentation in Venice on Saturday in which he reviewed some of the challenges of next year's bike race.

The press has been saying that Armstrong is racing the Giro d'Italia in May to win, then the Tour de France in July to support his Astana teammate Alberto Contador. But on Saturday he said:

“I know there's a lot of  talk about the pink jersey. I'm excited to race hard, but Ivan Basso is my favorite. ….

Astana wraps up Tenerife training

Came over the road in the distance, down to Masca, and made i... on TwitPic

Here's another in a series of photos posted by Lance Armstrong over at Twitpic. He's been training in the yellow and black Livestrong kit all week, which makes him easy to identify (click photo for larger version).

Saturday's training ride for Armstrong and Team Astana included a bike ride in the mountains of Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

The latest story from the training camp comes from directeur sportif Johan Bruyneel, who has managed 8 Tour de France championships — one with Alberto Contador and seven with Armstrong. Bruyneel told the AP that he has more challenges than just winning races now …
