Just learned the sad news that June Curry, the “Cookie Lady,” died on Monday at age 91.
This wonderful lady was the personal friend to the thousands of touring bicyclists who passed through Afton, Virginia, on the Trans America Bicycle Route since its inception in 1976. The walls of her home were papered with postcards …

KansasCyclist blogger Randy Rasa has created a helpful online guide if you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Kansas, on a bicycle, and in need of a place to pitch your tent.
Kansas Bicycle Camping is a directory of more than 200 locations in the Sunflower State where bicycle travelers are welcome to camp out.

The success of last month’s “Build It. Bike It. Be a Part of It.” campaign put the folks at Adventure Cycling Association in such a good mood that they’re offering free trial memberships.
The campaign raised more than $50,000 toward their work on the U.S. Bicycle Route System — a nationwide network of signed bicycle …

Bob Lee plans to embark on the third and final leg of his perimeter bicycle travels — Ride for 3 Reasons — around the continental United States this fall to raise money for three charities.
Now 70 years old, Lee continues to inspire me to never stop riding a bicycle.

The U.S. Bicycle Route System continues to grow.
Two new routes have been designated for numbering in the upper Midwest this month — USBR 35 in Michigan and USBR 45 in Minnesota (both shown in red at left).
In addition, USBR 1 in North Carolina was re-aligned.
The new routes add more than 600 miles to the bicycle route network that already includes other routes …

A few months ago, I wrote a short blog post here about Fred Birchmore, the mid-1930s bicycle traveler from Georgia. He may have been the first “Fred” — now a mocking term for a bicycling enthusiast.
At the time, “Bicycle: The History” author David V. Herlihy was working on a piece about Birchmore for the …

Finding herself suddenly unemployed in England, Jilly Sherlock loaded her panniers with 50 pounds of gear and hit the road on her bicycle.
That was a year ago. So far she’s traveled more than 8,000 miles in an easterly direction through 23 countries.
She celebrated her 1-year anniversary on the road in Thailand this week.
Sherlock may be traveling solo, but she is by no means alone. She keeps in touch …

A new policy in Virginia requires state parks to set aside areas for bicycle tourists so they’ll have a place to pitch their tents, even when the campgrounds are full.
This is an issue near and dear to traveling bicyclists who prefer camping but don’t relish the thought of stealth camping in a patch of woods.
It hasn’t been much of an issue for me lately, as most of my bike camping involves overnight trips. If I’m heading to Washington state parks, I can choose those that have primitive hiker/biker spots, such as the one at Joemma Beach State Park on the Key Peninsula, above left.
This one was swank by primitive standards ….

A city commission in Greenwood, Indiana, is turning away a proposed U.S. Bicycle Route that would take traveling bicyclists through the middle of its historic downtown.
It seemed surprising to me that a town would turn away tourism dollars, especially from those with such a low impact as touring bicyclists on the U.S. Bicycle Route System, a proposed 50,000-mile network of bicycle byways that will span the nation.
I asked Ginny Sullivan, the Adventure Cycling Association’s coordinator for the bike route network, whether this is common …

The home of the American auto industry is one of the cities on an alternate route unveiled today for the Underground Railroad Bicycle Route.
The Adventure Cycling Association didn't choose Detroit for its status as an auto maker, however. It was chosen for its place in history as the last stop for some slaves before reaching freedom in Canada.
The 2,000-mile Underground Railroad Bicycle Route, launched five years ago, roughly traces the paths of escaped slaves from the Deep South. The original bike route rolls out between Mobile, Alabama, and Owens Sound, Ontario.
The new 518-mile long Detroit Alternate, announced today to celebrate Black History Month, breaks from the main bike route …
