The U.S. Bicycle Route System continues to get longer.

What better day to start your bicycle travels than a sparkling clear spring day in April.
That’s how it worked out for Wendell Poole III, whom I happened upon while completing a Green River Trail-Interurban Trail loop in Kent on Thursday.
As I headed north and the temperature pushed toward 70 degrees early in the …

An annual rite of spring is the reopening of the North Cascades Highway in April or early May after snow plow crews complete the task of scraping the road to bare pavement.
That not only opens a 40-mile stretch of Highway 20 in northern Washington state to car traffic, but it also marks the reopening of a remarkably scenic link of Adventure Cycling Association’s Northern Tier and Washington State Parks bicycle routes to touring bicyclists.
The Washington State Department of Transportation is shooting for a 1 p.m. Tuesday reopening of the highway, unless this past weekend’s spring snows …

After being impressed with the winning images in the Adventure Cycling Association’s bike touring photography contests in recent years, I was really looking forward to the results of its Bike Travel Video Contest.
The winning videos announced recently in each of three categories did not disappoint. Each one is entertaining, brief, and should leave viewers with one common thought — traveling by bicycle is fun.
In my opinion, the succinctly named “Northern Europe by Bike” is the best of the best. The film by Stefan Böhm of Germany …

A Boulder, Colorado, man arrived safely back in Chile this past weekend after abandoning his attempt to be the first person to ride a bicycle to the South Pole.
Eric Larson, 41, launched the solo Cycle South expedition from the Hercules Inlet on the Antarctic coast on Dec. 20 with a goal to cover the 750 miles to the South Pole by Jan. 12.
Eight days after setting off, however, Larsen said he realized that he was only making about 10 nautical miles a day, not enough to reach his destination before his supplies ran out.
Climbing, headwinds, snow drifts …

December might not seem to be the ideal time to embark on a bicycle touring adventure, unless your destination is the South Pole where summer arrives Dec. 21.
That’s where Boulder-based adventurer Eric Larsen is headed on his 750-mile Cycle South expedition.
The 41-year-old is riding and carrying his provisions — about 100 pounds — …
