Recreational cyclists urged to avoid Burke Gilman Trail work area

While the closure of the Burke Gilman Trail from Log Boom Park to the Seattle city limits is a huge inconvenience for commuting bicyclists, recreational cyclists are being urged to stay out and avoid the area altogether.

A long-needed renovation of a 30-year-old section of the trail through Lake Forest Park began on Wednesday and forced cyclists onto a meandering official detour over hills and side streets with no less than 20 turns.

Apparently this was the best that King County could come up with, as they were thwarted in their efforts by local governments and agencies to create something better.

The issue of bike commuting through the region during construction, expected to last until November, has been covered in-depth by by Tom Foculoro at Seattle Bike Blog and …

Snoqualmie Pass Tunnel to reopen in July 2011

The tunnel through Snoqualmie Pass on the John Wayne Pioneer Trail will be reopened in July to bicyclists and hikers after safety issues prompted its closure two years ago, according to the contractor.

The Jacobs Associates provided design and repair work on the 2.3-mile long tunnel that was among five closed on the cross-state trail due to leaking water and falling debris (see picture at left).

Closure of Snoqualmie Tunnel in the Iron Horse State Park proved a huge disappointment to bicyclists, hikers and equestrians who used it as a traffic-free path linking western and eastern Washington. ….

Dismount for these switchbacks near Fall City (WA)

Maybe I'm a little too engrossed by the mountain stages of the Giro d'Italia, but these switchbacks on the Preston-Snoqualmie Trail caught my eye on a bicycle ride Tuesday.

These turns are sharp and the pitch of the gravel trail is steep. I had no problem obeying a sign that said bicyclists should dismount.

The switchbacks interrupt the rail-trail where it dips off the plateau to cross the Preston-Fall City Road and the Raging River …

“Share the Trail” in Renton (WA) on Saturday

Renton is hosting a “Share the Trail” event on the Cedar River Trail on Saturday to circulate information about the rules and trail etiquette that went into effect last summer.

In a nutshell, the city lowered the speed limit for bicycles to 10 mph and set a $101 fine for violations. It also painted a yellow line down the center of the trail and asks users to stay to the right of the line unless passing.

The parks department wants to make this Saturday event fun, so there will be booths with prizes and refreshments for all who attend from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ron Regis Park, Renton ….

South Lake Connector bike trail completed in Renton:
Reflects city's aviation history

If you're looking for a fresh bicycle trail to ride this weekend, you might want to head over to the just-completed South Lake Connector trail in Renton.

At less than a mile long, the multi-use trail fills the missing link on the Lake Washington bike route and connects the Cedar River Trail to a network of bicycling trails and bike lanes in King County.

I discovered the trail was open as I poked around on my bicycle in Renton on Friday. Although crews are still working on landscaping and no signs have been installed …

Near perfect spring cycling in western Washington

With the sunny weather and temperatures in the 60s, Saturday had to be one of the best days for a bicycle ride in western Washington this year.

These guys in red team kit would have to agree. This had to be one of the few times this year they could train on dry pavement and not have to rinse the wet, sticky road grit off their bikes once they returned home.

I shot this from an overpass along the Cedar River Trail between Maple Valley and Renton on Saturday. The river is running high, flowering trees are blossoming and the first leaves are just starting to sprout …

Off the beaten bike path of the Cedar River Trail; March tale of the tape

William Least Heat Moon admonished motorists to get off the interstate highways to explore the nation's back roads in his book “Blue Highways.”

He said that we get so locked into getting to a destination, we miss the surrounding countryside.

The same can be said of bicycling along a rail-to-trail, like the Cedar River Trail that runs between Renton and Maple Valley southeast of Seattle. I've used this trail as a thoroughfare to the rural bicycle routes in the area, but I rarely explore the trail surroundings.

This past month I rolled down there on my Rockhopper and followed some of the dirt paths that veer off the paved 17-mile trail. I stumbled across a wetland natural area that's a winter home for waterfowl and debris left over from an old brick plant …..

History of flight remembered in new Renton bike trail

Crews are dodging the recent rainy weather to complete the second phase of the Lake Washington Trail – South Lake Connector, also known as the Sam Chastain Trail, in Renton.

The trail runs for less than a mile just west of Logan Avenue North and will complete a connection between a bike lane that runs along road to Coulon Park on the north and the Cedar River Trail in the south (see map below).

As they near completion, workers are installing castings in the bike path that will call attention to the proximity of the local airfield and Boeing's history in the area, as well as the connection between flight and bicycling.

At left, you can make out the message embedded across the trail …..

Trails, ciclovia and pump track receive bike grants

A bicycle industry group that encourages people to get out and ride awarded grants to five projects this winter.

Recipients of the $40,000 Bikes Belong grants include three trail projects, a ciclovia in Minneapolis and a pump track in Philadelphia.

The grants raised through donations by bike industry employees reflect the wide diversity of bicycling projects that are underway across the US.

For instance, as your basic roadie, I was unfamiliar with pump tracks until a couple of years ago. Essentially, they're a loop on rolling terrain and banked turns that can be ridden without pedaling …

Razorback Greenway bike trail funding in Arkansas on chopping block
Funding cut

Republicans in Congress are targeting the Razorback Greenway in Arkansas as the type of pork they want to trim from the budget.

They're putting a $15 million pledge from the US Department of Transportation on the chopping block along with $61 billion in cuts they're considering, reports a local newspaper, the Times Record.

The 36-mile-long bike trail in northwestern Arkansas would connect the towns of Fayetteville, Bentonville, Rogers, Lowell, Springdale, and Johnson. The project, with a total cost of $40 million raised from local sources, was expected to be completed in 2012 ….
