Paul Otto Wantzelius: 1949 – 2010; memorial service planned

Year in and year out, the name Paul O. Wantzelius always has been listed on the roster of cyclists riding the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic.

For at least a decade, Wantzelius and Jerry Baker have been the only two cyclists riding the STP in consecutive years who were among the original 70 riders on the 200-mile bike ride the first time in 1979.

Wantzelius passed away in Hope, BC, on his way home from the Tour de Lacs bike ride in eastern Washington last month.

The Maple Valley resident had just announced his retirement from Boeing ….

A penny farthing for your thoughts — updated

Oct. 30, 2010 — It has been nearly three years since I wrote about two recent reincarnations of Thomas Stevens, the first man to circle the globe on a bicycle (left). A lot has happened since then. Here's the original story with updates included.

Dec. 13, 2007 — While one penny farthing rider has a hard time riding around his hometown of Palo Alto without getting stopped by police, another was invited by friendly police in Tibet to be their guest at a police station.

Martin Krieg says police in Palo Alto ….

“Standing bicyclist” completes GAP – C&O Canal bike tour

Frank Cavaluzzi stands up for what he believes, especially when he's bicycling.

While riding in a group charity bicycle ride is enough for most people, Cavaluzzi rides to raise money or awareness on a bicycle with no saddle.

Cavaluzzi discovered a few years ago that bicycling out of the saddle helps open up his diaphragm for breathing to combat the asthma he was suffering. It also allows him to make a statement.

You can imagine that a fully loaded bicyclist pedaling into town on a bike with no saddle can spark some conversations….

Tour de France wannabes fulfill their dreams at 2011 L'Etape du Tour

L'Etape du Tour is the Tour de France for the common man. The mass participation event enables weekend warriors on bicycles to test their performance against the stars of cycling.

Because of the growing popularity of the cycling event, bike race organizer ASO is expanding the event to two stages. Explaining at the l'Etape website:

“It became very difficult to refuse riders because of our 10,000 limit. In organising 2 races, we would like to offer all riders the possibility to ride the Champions routes, on the historic Tour de France stages. … These 2 races, with very different profiles and landscapes ….

Annual Indiana bike tour changes format to bicycle rally

Pitch your tent. Sleep. Strike your tent. Ride. Pitch your tent. Sleep. Strike your tent. Ride. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

This is the routine on most week-long across-state mass bicycle tours. It's a common drill as the community of cyclists moves from one host location to the next.

After using that method to visit state parks around Indiana for 28 years, the Touring Ride in Rural Indiana (TRIRI) is experimenting with a bicycle touring concept used elsewhere and based on a bicycle rally.

The 2011 TRIRI organizers are choosing a single state park …

A bicycle ride to honor the Issaquah Alps

With Tuesday's news from Paris that the Tour de France would pay homage to the Alps in 2011, it occurred to me that I should pay a visit to our very own second cousin to that famous European mountain chain.

As soon as the fog lifted, I saddled up and headed out for a bike ride up Tiger Mountain, the centerpiece of the Issaquah Alps.

These “Alps” are a chain of foothills west of the Cascades that overlook the sprawling suburbs on the eastside of Seattle. From West to East, they're comprised of Cougar Mountain, Squak Mountain, the various summits of Tiger Mountain and Rattlesnake Ridge. You can also throw in ….

Bike trail deal closes the GAP in Pittsburgh

Most of the Great Allegheny Passage has been opened for the past four years, providing bicycle travelers with a 150-mile traffic-free rail-trail from Cumberland, Maryland, to the outskirts of Pittsburgh.

The final 9 miles between McKeesport and Pittsburgh has been touch and go, however, with missing bridges and trail segments absent in the urban area. The trail association even suggests that cyclists catch a shuttle through this section, unless they're accustomed to riding unfriendly roads.

Now, the last pieces to the puzzle are falling into place.

Allegheny County officials announced last week that they now have “site control” of that final 9 miles …..

Updating the 2011 Across State Bicycle Tours list

If the letters BRAG, RAGBRAI, GOBA, TRIRI and SAGBRAW are dancing in front of your eyes, either you're eating alphabet soup or you've been checking the 2011 line-up of Across State Tour Bicycle Tours.

For the past few days, I've been updating this website's list of these multi-day, mass bicycle rides offered mostly by nonprofits. Many of your favorites have posted dates for 2011, although most are still working on the actual overnight stops.

The organization offering the most bicycle tours is, not surprisingly, the Adventure Cycling Association. They're presenting 45 multi-day bicycle tours in 2011; most are a week to 10 days long, although ….

27 states making progress on U.S. Bicycle Route System

Two years ago this month, state and federal transportation officials endorsed a plan to create a 50,000-mile nationwide system of connected bicycles routes.

Today, 27 states and the District of Columbia are working toward implementing numbered bicycle routes that will connect to routes in other states.

Ideally, traveling cyclists will be able to ride from one city to another on the US Bicycle Route System by following a uniformly posted route system that crosses state lines.

Although not all states appear to be on board with the project, enough are involved to create tangible results with some interstate bicycle routes
