Mount Rainier's Carbon River Road to become bike – hike trail

An historic auto road that goes deep into the Mount Rainier National Park will be permanently converted into a trail for bicyclists and hikers under a plan announced by the park service on Friday.

The Carbon River Road in the northwest end of the park has been closed to auto traffic since 2006 because of a series of damaging floods. It has remained open, when possible, as far as the Isput Creek Campground for hikers and bikers.

Under the new plan, an effort will be made to retain as much of the historic road as possible. Trails that connect those old road sections along the Carbon River will be upgraded for bicycle use.

That 5-mile-long road was originally built in 1921. It connected the park entrance ….

Myth-busting the RAGBRAI and Ride the Rockies bike tours

Bicycling enthusiasts know the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) and the Denver Post Ride the Rockies as two iconic cross-state bicycle tours with a combined history of 65 years.

RAGBRAI is the easy one that rolls across the flatness of Iowa. Ride the Rockies is the challenging one that summits mountain passes nearly every day.

Those myths don't exactly bear up to the facts, however.

In terms of elevation gain — which should really be the yardstick for comparing a flat ride and a mountainous ride — there's not much difference between the two. In fact, bicycle riders on 2011 RAGBRAI will face more climbing ….

Update: Cascade to offer new ride — RSVP2; February registration details

Because of the huge demand for Ride from Seattle to Vancouver and Party (RSVP) in recent years, the Cascade Bicycle Club has announced it will host a second identical ride this year — dubbed RSVP2 — that leaves one-day later.

Unlike the grandfather ride, registration for the new RSVP2 will be handled on a lottery basis with winners selected by random.

Registration for the lottery runs from next Wednesday, Feb. 9, to Feb. 23 …..

Technology leading travelers astray in the desert

Don't believe everything you read, especially if you're relying on GPS maps in the desert.

The Sacramento Bee has a fascinating story about what one wilderness coordinator in Death Valley calls “death by GPS.” It involves people heading off into the desert with the latest technology and finding themselves directed down roads unsuitable for most cars.

The story doesn't mention bicyclists getting lost and dying in the desert on bad roads; I hope it's because we have the sense to carry enough water and to confirm the suitability of our routes ahead of time ….

Convincing communities that bicycling makes dollars and sense

What's one of the best ways to get business and government leaders to support bicycling? Convince them that bicycling brings dollars into their communities.

The Bikes Belong Foundation realizes this and is launching a $40,000 fund this year that pays for research into the economic benefits of bicycle infrastructure and events.

Research over the years has shown that community investment in bicycling has huge dividends. Some of these findings were summarized in a slideshow — “The Economic Benefits of Bicycling” — that the Adventure Cycling Association presented to the South Dakota Bike Summit last week ….

2011 RAGBRAI and Biking Across Kansas host cities announced

Bicyclists who plan to take off across Iowa and Kansas this summer now know where they'll be staying as the routes for those across-state bicycle rides were announced on Saturday.

The announcement is especially huge for the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) because businesses and charities in the small towns stand to make a million or more dollars off the 10,000 cyclists and other visitors who spend the night.

The host cities were revealed at an announcement party in Des Moines Saturday night. The 39th annual RAGBRAI will roll out for 454 miles from July 24-30 on a west to east route through the following host cities:…

Oklahoma bill would make Route 66 a “Historic Bike Trail”

A 90-mile section of the Mother Road, Route 66, in Oklahoma would be designated a “Historic Bike Trail” under a bill submitted by a state legislator.

It's the latest move to transform the historic 2,400-mile highway from Chicago to Los Angeles into a long-distance bicycle route.

Adventure Cycling Association announced in November that it had chosen the corridor of the iconic American highway as its next bicycle route, complete with detailed road maps and descriptions of roadside services ….

Chris Horner launches Cascade Gran Fondo bike ride in Oregon

Lance Armstrong has the Livestrong Challenge, Levi Leipheimer has the King Ridge Gran Fondo in Santa Rosa, and now Chris Horner is rolling out the Cascade Gran Fondo bicycle ride near his hometown of Bend, Oregon.

The 39-year-old RadioShack cyclist is known as much for his humor as his pro cycling career that stretches back to 1996.

Now he's hosting a weekend fund-raiser event that's scheduled for Aug. 18-20, 2011. It features an “Evening of Stories” the first night, a VIP dinner the second, and a 75-mile Gran Fondo-style bicycle ride through the Cascades on the third day ….
