Route announced for Ride Around Washington 2012

A rainy winter day is a perfect time to ponder a bicycle ride across the dry side of Washington state.

That's the destination for Ride Around Washington 2012, announced last week by the Cascade Bicycle Club.

The 400-mile supported bicycle tour rolls out Aug. 5-11 through the Ponderosa pines to the wide-open hills of the Palouse and back again. Along the way, riders will spend a couple of nights in western Idaho.

My son and I bicycled previous RAW tours that individually visited these regions. The roads …

The Cascade Bicycle Club is presenting the Red-Bell 100 on June 30 next year. Registration opens Jan. 25.

As you can probably guess, the charity ride rolls out from Marymoor Park in Redmond and ends with a party in Bellingham. It follows bike trails and low-traffic roads that will be familiar to cyclists on Day 1 of the RSVP …

The 3 Berg brothers give thanks on Pan-American bicycle journey

Three brothers traveling on a Pan-American bicycle tour are giving thanks this Thanksgiving for the folks who have helped them along their journey so far.

The three Berg brothers of North Dakota are on a quest to raise funds and awareness for Habitat for Humanity along the way. [That's two of them riding their bikes into the fog along the California coast.]

At their blog, BoundSouth, they write:

“Every day of Bound South is a thanksgiving. Be it a simple meal, a warm bed, or an uplifting ….

Mark Beaumont's around-the-world bicycle adventure

What is worse than hearing rats scurrying around your hotel room getting into your bike panniers at night? It might be waking up the next morning with rat turds on the pillow.

That episode in India kind of strips the glamour off the idea of bicycling around the world in pursuit of a world record. It's just one of many experiences recounted in Mark Beaumont's book “The Man Who Cycled the World,” recently released in the US.

The Scotsman was the second in what has seemed a rush of bicyclists seeking a Guinness World Record for bicycling around the world.

Beaumont accomplished his feat in 2008, completing his grand adventure in 194 days and 17 hours. Remarkably, he shaved 81 days off the record ….

Tour des Trees coming to Oregon in 2012: Ride your bike, plant a tree

A week-long bicycle tour that celebrates the common tree and raises money for tree research is rolling into Oregon next year.

It marks only the fourth time that the Tour des Trees bicycle tour has visited the Pacific Northwest. The inaugural ride rolled from Seattle to Oakland in 1992, then started in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in 1997 and Seattle again in 2002.

Next year's Stihl Tour des Trees (Aug. 5-11, 2012) encompasses a 585-mile loop that includes Pacific Coast rain forests and the central high deserts. When they aren't bicycling, tree lovers will be planting trees or offering tree-education programs to kids.

While the warning “On your left!” is a common refrain ….

World-traveling bicyclist overcomes disabilities

The fact that Dejan Zafirov lost one leg and injured the other in a work accident hasn't stopped him from his goal of bicycling around the world.

The Macedonian cyclist rolled into San Francisco on Friday after completing a two-month cross-country ride on his fully loaded bicycle.

He already has toured on his bicycle in South America, Europe, and Asia. His tour across the US was launched to inspire his fellow countrymen and raise money for adaptive sports equipment at home through his Citizens Association Gaia.

Dejan rides his bicycle with a prosthetic right leg to compensate …

Take a virtual bike ride on Burke Gilman and Cedar River trails

Larger view on jump

The Google Street View trike has been hitting the bicycle trails in Seattle and King County over the past summer and now those trail views are available on Google Maps.

I mashed a couple of trails with the TripGeo.com application to animate the bike path views on the Burke-Gilman Trail between Gas Works and Log Boom parks, left, and the Cedar River Trail from Renton to Landsburg, below.

It's fun to see the locales of our off-road rides preserved on the Internet. Seattle Bike Blog located trail views outside the Seattle Google headquarters in Ballard and the Seattle end of the I-90 bike trail….

The bicycle continued to be an important fund-raising tool in the fight against cancer in 2011.

Although figures aren't available from the scores of cancer-battling bicycle rides in 2011, three big ones alone raised more than $53 million.

The three — Pan Mass Challenge, Pelotonia, and the Livestrong Challenge series — brought together 19,000 bicycle riders in the fight against cancer. Congratulations to them all.

The Massachusetts-based Pan Mass Challenge continued its dominance as the most successful athletic fund-raising event in the nation …

California and Colorado bicycle tour dates announced

Is your 2012 bike tour going to be a Rocky Mountain High? Or are you California Dreamin'?

In either case, you have a dozen multi-day bike tours scheduled this summer in Colorado and California from which to choose.

Some are mass bike rides with hundreds of cyclists, such as Ride the Rockies presented by the Denver Post. Others are more intimate affairs with fewer than 20 riders offered by Adventure Cycling Association.

I'm updating the list of Across-State Bicycle Rides for 2012, so there are dates and host cities …
