Back in 2007, I posted a story here about a professor who took a 6-month leave from the University of Minnesota to study how Latino immigration is changing the United States.
The unique aspect for me was that he did much of his work from the saddle of his touring bicycle. Louis Mendoza pedaled nearly 7,000 miles on his perimeter travels around the country to talk with Latinos from all walks of life.
He conducted many interviews, and they’ve been compiled into a book: “Conversations Across Our America, Talking about Immigration and the Latinoization of the United States” which is scheduled for release this summer. …

Heavy road traffic in North Dakota’s “drill baby drill” region is forcing Adventure Cycling Association to relocate two established bicycle routes and issue new replacementent maps.
The Northern Tier and Lewis & Clark bicycle routes were redrawn to avoid the heavy traffic related to the oil and gas industry surge in northwestern North Dakota and moved southward generally to the Interstate 94 corridor.
Cartographer Jennifer ‘Jenn’ Milyko announced the changes at the Adventure Cycling blog last month. The national wire services picked up the story Tuesday under the headline “Bicycle group warns riders to steer clear of North Dakota’s oil patch due to dangerous traffic.”
The non-profit has been dealing with the issue for at least four years. ….

The American Lung Association is launching the Ride Around the Sound on Sept. 15 as a one-day charity bike ride that ends in West Seattle.
The new bike ride is not to be confused with the long-time popular RAPSody (Ride Around Puget Sound), a two-day ride that benefits the Bicycle Alliance of Washington. That’s scheduled for Aug. 25 and 26 this year.

If weather forecasters are accurate, Sunday's 40th annual Chilly Hilly bike ride should hold true to its name.
The Sunday forecast for the Bainbridge Island perimeter bike ride is “mostly cloudy and chilly” with a possibility of showers and a high of 44; wind out of the west at 8 mph.
That's the kind of weather that cyclists expect for Chilly Hilly, along with the 2,675 feet of elevation gain over the rolling 33 miles course. The photo at left is from 2007, a cold wet day.
Of course, cyclists didn't complain …
